XP: Orthodox/Arab Brides

I need pictures, inspiration, etc

FI's family is Orthodox, I am still learning. I want to incorporate traditions in the ceremony and reception. We are getting married in a Greek Orthodox church. Some ideas for reception: jordan almonds on the candy buffet, FI wants Arab music, I may surprise him with a belly dancer, appetizers will be meditrannean/antipasta spread with hummus and grape leaves.

Is this too much, not enough?

Re: XP: Orthodox/Arab Brides

  • your FI is arab and orthodox? and is there too much or not enough of what?

  • I don't know about belly dancing; is it that common and authentic there?  Everything else sounds good.  Maybe instead of belly dancing you can do traditional dances where everyone can participate.  For example, in Greek weddings there's the hasapiko and kalamatiano.  And if you get permission, you can break a plate (not sure if that's done in Arab cultures, though).

You don't always have to go overboard on the traditions.  I think the Orthodox Christian ceremony brings a strong dose of tradition.

In response to the second poster: there is indeed a small community of Arab Orthodox Christians, as the Middle East was strongly Christian before Islam and not everyone converted. However, few communities today remain, as many emigrated in various diasporas.

    Hope this helps!
