worst luck ever FML

Just picked up FI wedding band today and got to hotel and didnt want to leave it in the car for someone to see the bag and break in so we brought it in the hotel.  Someone must have seen it because we left to go to get gas and toothpaste and then we came back the whole bag and ring were gone.

Police said there is nothing we can did since it wasnt engraved so even if they find it they cant prove its ours.  The best we can do is call local pawn shops and if we find it then buy it back.

I just found the empty jareds bag outside in the dumpster this morning...empty of course...The cops and hotel seemed to be convinced I had just lost it somewhere in the hotel...well I guess not.

OMG, that's awful. What hotel were you staying at? How did they break into your hotel room!?
  • edited December 2011
That seems odd that they aren't more willing to help you?! Doesnt the hotel have camera's where they could see who was in your room? I'm really sorry that this has happened to you, I hope you can get it resolved.

That's terrible! I'm so sorry! Did you buy any sort of insurance on the ring at Jared's in case it got stolen? I can't believe that the police and hotel don't really seem to care.

Oh my gosh!  That is horrible and ridiculous that the hotel and police are not doing more!  They should have cameras and be able to see who it was!  I'm sorry. :(

Wow I would be so upset.  I would be equally upset with the police and hotel.  How did they get into your hotel??  What hotel is it???

Whoa! That is really crappy and sucks. I agree do they not have camera in the hotel. I'm confused, was it in your hotel room when it was stolen. Can't they tell when the hotel room was entered? I'm just shocked. :(

You have some recourse in an event like this. First, you want to call the hotel and tell them you'd like to file an insurance claim with their liability carrier. Second, tell them that you want the key log for your room. All hotels that use electronic keys can print out a key log for a particular room number. It will tell you exactly which keys (yours, cleaning, maintenance, etc.) entered the room. Because you have a small window of time where this occurred, it's even better for you. Don't just accept that this happened. You can definitely do something about it. I worked in insurance claims and handled several hotel accounts. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. Based on your state (I'm assuming you're in TX, but you said it happened in a hotel?) there are some addiotional laws that apply. Keep your receipts for the rings! You'll need to send a copy to the insurance co.

It was the la quinta in plano on central express way it was one of the enter from the outside (which had I realized this I would have chosen a different hotel because I never liked those).  I have stayed at la quintas in the past not five star but usually pretty good.  They do not have camera, they are insistant that NO ONE could have gotten into the room other than us even when I questioned cleaning crew they told me they turn their keys in by noon.  I dont know how they got in but there were marks on the door by the key card accepter.  I followed the polices instructions and called pawn shops only to be told by them that they cant release any information to me and the cops have to do it but the cops wont either.  I called jareds and they only offer lost/stolen coverage if you use their CC.  I called my CC and they only offer it for 7 days after the purchase and it was a special order.  It is covered under my home owners/renters but the deductible is more than the ring so it does no good.  I have tried every option I can think of.  I talked to the manager this morning before I checked out and got no where.  I plan on calling the detective tomorrow (as of today no one was assigned to the case) and I will also take the advice on here and call their head quarters about filing a claim.  Any other advice I am all ears I will let you ladies know what I find out. I told FI I will never forget this because even if we get a new one it was the one that was "suppose" to be on his finger that day.  I keep telling myself I should have just locked it in the glove box and not taken it inside I just cant seem to forgive myself for this one.  It seems so easy for the theif and so hard for the victim to do anything.

How you handle this is completely up to you. I don't know how much the ring was, if it's a big deal for you to replace it, etc. But, if you want any chance of getting them to reimburse you, your best bet is to not let this go. Don't let them intimidate you into just walking away. Like I said, I have handled several claims like this. They have liability insurance for this very reason. Tell them you want this reported to their insurance carrier, and you're not going away until it's assigned to an adjuster and you have been given his/ her contant info. Don't take their word for it that no one entered the room. Make them PROVE it to you. Tell them that you know there is a key log, and you want to see it. Each key has an identifier, and that log will tell you exactly who was in the room. If the manager isn't being helpful, you should get in contact with their corporate office. That usually gets things moving.

I definately plan on exhausting every option and being fairly persistant but at the same time if I keep dwelling on this for days or weeks and get no where it is just going to continue to get me down.  I am on the phone with the guest services dept for laqiuinta and already left a message for the detective.

The first time I took my daughter to Padre we stayed at the Holiday Inn.  The girl at the concierge talked to us about things to do and we booked a dolphin watching cruise for that same night.  We checked in, I grabbed some cash for the cruise and we left.  I left my purse on the dresser (since we had just checked in, I knew no one would be coming in there.)  When we got back, $200 cash was gone out of my purse.  Everyone there swore up and down there was no way someone came in and took it.  Lesson learned, from then on I put my purse in the safe no matter what.

The next morning, we passed that same concierge and she said to me with a smirk on her face "How was the cruise?"  I know it was an inside job but there was nothing I could do.

I'm so sorry this happened and I hope you get some resolution.  But you are right--there's nothing more you can do except exhaust your resources, then move on.
