Name Changes

How difficult is it to just add your husband's last name if you don't drop any other part of your current name?  I want his last name but don't want to drop anything else in my name.  My only option would be to have two middle names (I don't want two last names).  How difficult is this?  Is it just my discression?  I'd appreciate any input.

Re: Name Changes

  • It really depends on your state. Some states can do it on your marriage license, and some require a court ordered name change. It is best to contact your local court house to find out your options.

Yup. Here in NY I would need to do a legal name change to do this, as my only options for the marriage license were to leave my name as is, change my last name, hyphenate, or somehow combine our last names together into one new name.

The info in NY is easily available on the NY state health department website. Try to google ga marriage license (or whatever state you're getting married in), and maybe you'll find the same info.

This, but make sure to talk to someone in the marriage license office- not just a general clerk of court. Also you can call your state's vital record/ statistics office they might know/ provide info.
