what is a grooms cake?

I've never heard of one until I came to this website, never saw or had one at a wedding. I'm confused. Why have 2 cakes?

Re: what is a grooms cake?

  • the grooms cake is just a little something specifically for him. weddings are usually all about the bride and it's just a way to give him something special just for him. it's usually shapped in something that he likes, such as a sport or hobby, and is flavored with his favorite type of cake and filling. it's not required, but it's just something nice for him as a little extra.
  • Just to add to what psichick  said. It can also be presented to the groom at the rehearsal dinner. Its just a nice little thing that some brides surprise their soon to be hubby with.

It's a southern tradition.  It goes back to a time when the wedding was all about the bride, and the groom's cake was a way of adding the groom's interests.  Also, it was a way to have chocolate cake when the regular cake was always white cake.

Do you remember the armadillo cake in Steel Magnolias?  That was the groom's cake.

It's sort of caught on because it's an excuse to have a fun cake.  Our groom's cake was a soccer stadium, because of my DH's favorite sport.
  • I'm from the South (MS) so I have ALWAYS seen grooms cakes at weddings.. in fact, I can't remember a wedding that didn't have one.  I was watching cake boss last night and saw where they were talking about having a grooms cake was such a southern traditional.  I love how different areas have different traditionals!

  • i think gooms cake's are fun! they're a way to give him something special. i've been debating what to get for ours. he said he doesn't want one, but i might do it anyway :)
  • I see. I just figured I'd incorporate his interests into the whole wedding. We're having a Simpsons cake topper and mini Dodger baseball helmets as favors...

  • The groom's cake was originally a fruit cake.  It was cut and put in small boxes for the guests to bring home.  The tradition was that the single females would sleep with it under their pillow and dream of their future husband.

As with many other things, the groom's cake has evolved over the years.  Now it is often used to highlight a major interest of the groom.  Some people get a smaller wedding cake and then serve both cakes at the wedding.  Others serve it at the rehearsal dinner.

My DD had a groom's cake made as a surprise and served it at the rehearsal dinner.

  • I grew up in the South and never went to a wedding where there wasn't one!  I wasn't planning on having one, but that's the FIRST thing my mother started getting excited about after I got engaged.  She had lots and lots of...interesting...ideas.
  • It is a southern tradition and I am having one for my FI for a Florida garden wedding. He just graduated from University of Florida so I am having an realistic alligator cake wthat will have a UF football jersey on it with red velvet cake filing (like the armadillo in Steel Magnolias) in it. It's going to be horrible looking and I cannot wait to see everyones reaction. I haven't decided on wether or not to serve it at the rehearsal dinner or have it the day of the wedding. My cake, on the other hand, will be elegant and white.
  • My FMIL wants to do a grooms cake, which is TOTALLY fine with me, but we're putting a different twist on it.  Both of our cakes will incorporate things that interest both of us.  We're classical musicians, and the main wedding cake is going to be topped with our instruments and incorporate sheet music on the sides.  The grooms cake will be a character from our favorite movie, Star Wars!

The question is, do we serve them side-by-side at the wedding or have the grooms cake at the rehearsal?  What are your opinions?!

  • OMG!  I'm so glad I came upon this one! I've never been to a wedding where there was a grooms cake.  But FH's family is from TX.  and learning that this is a definite tradition... I think I might just have to look into it....

    Thanks for bringing this up!Wink

  • I like the Groom's Cake idea because I can surprise my FI and show him that I DID think of him when planning this wedding! ;) He has no idea that I am doing this, so I'm super excited! He works for UPS so we are doing a cake shaped like the UPS emblem! I can't wait to see his face! ♥
  • kkrissel, it totally depends on what you want.  My daughter had a sit-down dinner, after she and her husband did the first slice, the cake was taken into the kitchen, sliced, plated, and served to the guests.  Since the cake wouldn't be set out for guests to select the slice they wanted, she opted to only served the wedding cake at the wedding.

She served the groom's cake at the rehearsal which was probaly, in their case, more appropriate.  The groom's cake was designed exactly like their favorite bottle of limoncello.

  • That's what we are doing, incorporating both of our interestes and likes into the entire wedding. This isn't just my day, it is his also.
