I am an Italian from New York living in FLorida. Our weddings in NY consisted of giving a check or money-never gifts, and you didn't put them on a table-they went in a white purse. Now, my son is getting married here in Florida where gifts are the norm. Still, there are the people who will still give envelopes. There were two weddings that I have heard of recently, where the envelopes were put in a box on a table and everything was stolen. So, my question is this-If people ask where to put the gift or envelope, is it rude for me to say-"I'll take it" and put it somewhere discreet?

You should discuss this with the bride and groom and not make this decision yourself. Could be they've already addressed this issue.  Theft from weddings is not common here but not unheard of (a year ago there was theft of cards from 2 weddings, the thieves were caught and are serving time).

Our plan is to have the card box where it is easily visable. It is a large white box with a slit in the top. Someone either lifting the lid to take something out or to actually take the box would easily be seen. My brother is going to keep an eye on the box and empty it periodically.

We did not have any problems with our reception and our card box, but I definitely heard of this being an issue sometimes. I agree with pp, you may need to designate someone to empty the card box periodically or even keep the gift table away from the door. Maybe this would help prevent just anyone from walking off of the street and stealing. Bc if it were closer to where the people were, there would be a better chance of someone seeing them. Will there be a security guard at the door or in the parking lot? I know a lot of weddings have them.

The card box can be locked. If the box can be opened it is possible for someone to reach in and grab a card and easily hide it in a purse or pocket. Obviously the box can't just look like a safe though because then guests would think you don't trust them. Decorations could hide a lock and the only other opening would be a slit- things can only go in not come out. Another upside to decorating the box is that it would be very suspicious and noticeable if someone were to try to walk away with it. Having the gift/card table away from the entrance is is a great idea too.

I think its great your asking these things for your sons wedding. I'm sure he appreciates you being so helpful. I know I am happy when my mom comes to me with an idea I hadn't even thought of!

As a suggestion...my cousin had her gift table and her card box set up in between the dj and the wedding party's table. Not that she intended the dj to keep an eye on it or anything just that is was kinda in view of everyone which she guessed would steer someone away from the idea of trying to linger around the gift table. And as suggested before..the best man was in charge of checking and emptying it periodically.  Hope that helps
