Father of the Bride's Attire

My mother and I are having a disagreement on what my dad wears.  Is he supposed to match the groomsman or can he be different.  The wedding is in Hawaii and he loves Hawaiian shirts but the groomsman and groom are going with the linen pants and white shirts.  What is the proper thing for my dad to wear.  THanks!!

Usually the FOB wears something different than the groom. That is what we are doing, but with a destination wedding, I dunno know. I would try posting this on the destination board and see what you get there, esp the brides that are already married.

I don't think I've ever seen FOB wear exactly the same thing as the groomsmen.  I think a Hawaiian shirt would look fine next to the other guys in photos, FWIW.  Why not let your dad decide if he is more comfortable in a Hawaiian shirt or matching the guys and go with that?

Your dad's a big boy, I'm sure he can decide what to wear on his own.  Present a few options and let him choose.

Your dad is not part of the wedding party, so you don't get to tell him what to wear.  He gets to wear whatever he wants.

My entire wedding party will be in the same tux. The vest is what will differ: Groom in ivory, GM in green and fathers (both) in black.

Everyone in my party is very open to this.  You can give him some options to work with but in the end he needs to be happy.

I definitely don't think he has to match the groomsmen or groom. 

We had a Florida Keys destination wedding.  The groomsmen were in linen shirts and linen pants.  The groom wore a taupe/sand colored linen suit (no tie).  After hearing what the other guys were wearing, DH's dad decided to wear a cream colored linen suit with no tie.

Hmm. I don't think I'll know what my dad is wearing until my wedding day.

But my mother has made a huge deal about exactly what she, my stepfather, and my brother will be wearing. I couldn't care less.

I had the same question, so I asked my grandma and my future mother-in-law and they both said that the father of the bride usually wears something different than the groomsmen. I think i'm going to have my dad in black dress pants and a white button up shirt with a pink tie. My colors are Black, White, and Pink. Something simple. My dad hates monkey suits and ties, so the easier it is for him to get off for the wedding reception, the better! *ha*

We're also doing tuxes with different vests. I asked my dad what he wanted to wear, a suit or a tux.  (Fi's dad & stepdad will probably just wear suits). Since he is walking me down the aisle, he opted for the tux.  I just wanted to make sure he was comfortable.
