Mother/Son Dance, Tradition or Not?

Hi Ladies, My question is a little different from the other girls. I was just wondering if the Mother/Son Dance is an old traditionally wedding dance like the Father/Daughter Dance or if it is just an optional dance to do in more recent weddings?

Thanks so much!

  • I think it's one of those things that just depends on where you are or who your crowd is.  I haven't seen a mother/son dance in the last 15 years.  Never at a wedding that had a specific father/daughter dance.  And never a spotlighted mother/son dance. Now I have been at weddings as a kid where the parents would be invited to join the couple on the dance floor, then instructed to have the groom dance with MIL and bride to dance with her dad, then to switch to the groom dances with his mom and bride with FIL.

  • My one aunt got married back in January, and the groom's mother was in a wheelchair. He still wanted a spotlight moment with his mom, so after the bride had the father/daughter dance, the DJ made an announcement that the groom had selected a special song to honor his mother (I really can't remember how it got worded exactly), but when the song came on, the groom just went over to his mother and sat with her and the 2 of them just sat together talking and the photographer took pictures ... basically it was what one would do during the dance, without the actual dancing.

  • I agree with choosing a short song or having your dj edit a song your FI  & his mom choose if she really wants to do it but can't stand/dance long. My BFF's dad has health problems, and they are shortening the song they chose so that he can get through it ok.
