Mixing Mexican Padrino Custom with American Family

Hi everyone!

My fiancé and I are both students, and therefore really strapped for cash.  We were discussing what would be the best way to pay for our wedding next October besides saving, and he told me about "padrinos": family members or close friends who are chosen to pay for certain parts of the ceremony/reception or provide key items (food, rings, etc.)  In Mexico, where he's from, being chosen as a padrino is a huge honor.

I guess what I'm asking is how to introduce this custom to my American family without making it seem like we're begging for their money.

If anyone has gone through this or has any ideas on how to handle the discussion, it would be greatly appreciated!
