Wearing Engagement Ring

I have seen several people wear their engagement ring on their right hand the day of the wedding and I have seen some that wear it on the left hand. So I'm confused as to what I should do. Are you supposed to wear it on the left or right? or does it even matter?

Re: Wearing Engagement Ring

  • Usually the wedding ring is supposed to be the first ring on your left hand so often brides will wear it on their right hand the day of the wedding to leave the left hand ready for the wedding ring and then transfer the e-ring back to the left after the ceremony. Some just switch the order of the rings after the ceremony, if they didn't move over/take off their e-ring prior.

  • I switched mine to my right hand the morning of the wedding. Then, after the wedding band was on my finger, I switched them after the ceremony for pictures and everything. Or you could leave it off all together and give it to your MOH or leave it in the dressing room and put it on later. There is no right or wrong way to do it. Whatever you feel comfortable with.
  • It doesn't matter.  I meant to put mine on my right hand before the ceremony but totally forgot.  So when my H put my wedding band on, he just put it on over the engagement ring.  As soon as the ceremony was over, I switched them to the way they're supposed to be (band on bottom, e-ring closest to fingernail).  No  one will know or care what you decide to do.

  • Same with Indians - wedding rings on their right hand.  I have my e-ring on my left, and wedding ring on my right.

  • I have a set that is supposed to be worn connected together, so I have no idea what I'll do about that. Probably just leave the engagement ring off and connected with the wedding ring so that my fiance will just put them both on together during the ceremony.

  • Yup, that is the way I would do it if they are going to be together by the time you get married

  • Thanks to everyone for their input as well. I'm getting married in 3 weeks and hadn't really thought about what I was going to do with my rings. Good advice!

  • Does anyone know the tradition of why we wear our e-rings on our left hand? As a left handed person who just got engaged, I really wish I could wear the ring on my right hand (would be a lot easier)!

  • I think it comes from an old belief that there is a vein that runs from the ring finger of the left hand directly to your heart.  Therefore, the ring has a direct connection to your heart.  Nebbiolo, I'm left handed too but you get used to it.

  • i know that the wedding ring went on the left had because more people are right handed and when it came to wipeing well....
  • I've though a lot about that too (oh the things you can think of at 2 am over a year away from your wedding date!) and have gotten many different answers.

My E ring doesn't fit on my right hand and it's my late grandmothers so I couldn't not wear it. I'm wearing it on my left (it doesn't even come close to fitting on my right), but I'm turning it upside down from how I usually wear it. It is a very unique design and if I'm wearing it the normal way it would be uncomfortable with a band.

Then after the ceremony I'll flip it around the right way. :)

And they are right. No one will know or mind what you do. My girlfriend got married and they put her ring on the wrong hand by accident. No one had any idea, not even the bridesmaids, until she told us.
