Even Sides...

My sides were beautifully uneven until yesterday :(  Apparently one of our groomsmen (a close friend on both FI and I) got into some trouble at work. Now they are saying that he can't switch days with anyone as part of his punishment. That means he would be working during the wedding.

I'm super bummed that he might not be there but I feel really bad for him. He's really bummed about it too. It is also 9 days until the wedding and he's already fully paid for the tux. To make matters a little worse, he and his new FI had planned on getting married next month. Work says he won't be able to get off for this own wedding. They sent out invitations which were received on Tuesday, just one day before he got into trouble. There is still a 10% chance he can be there but as of now it isn't looking good Frown

It's the lawyer in me, but it really sounds like they want to fire him and don't have a legitimate reason to do so - not let him off for his own wedding???  What was it that got him into trouble?  I'm guessing it's not a terminable offense under the policy handbook.

I'm sorry your wedding isn't going smoothly :(

  • Sheesh, that's terrible.  I'd quit, but I know that's big of me to say when I'm not in his shoes.  That sucks.  I hope that things work out for him.  If anyone told me I couldn't take the time off to get married, I'll tell them where they could stick it and walk out.

  • tldh - he's a cop so the rules are a little more strict than normal work places. It was something about a chase going into a different county, he followed and crossed into the county by accident. The other county is pissed and it's all politics :(

  • Bummer!  That's totally ridiculous!  I mean, I know the whole rules on crossing county lines and such, but it's not like he was doing drugs on the job or stealing money...he was trying to do his job!!!

Suz - tell him to contact the FOP today.  In the trade unions it would be the shop steward that he'd contact, not sure the title of the FOP contact but he should know.

My dad was an IBEW business manager and had to intervene on a few occassions in situations that were totally ridiculous.

  • Frogurt - Ironcially the county he crossed into is who my FI works for. They are a bigger department and considered a level up from GM's city department. Fi's department is very political and also doesn't allow chases because it puts the public at risk so they were extra pissed. It was more of a 'the chase is supposed to immediately end' instead of a 'you can't cross into our county' sort of thing.

  • South Carolina has a FOP: http://www.scfop.org/

He should really get in touch with them just to find out if he has any recourse.

  • Oh man, that's rough.  I feel really bad for your GM.

  • His FI should go to his bosses and cry.  Actual tears.  It's over the top, but quite effective.  It's really hard to say no to the crying chick, especially when you're otherwise telling her that her wedding can't happen...

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I'm not usually the one to support a person to cry to the media about their problems but I think them not letting off for his own wedding is an exception.
