Wedding Party

What do you all think of this?

So, I went to Chipotle while on break today, and I overheard some girls talking (I would have had to plug my ears and started humming to not hear what they were saying, and that might have appeared strange ;).Anyway, they were discussing how two of them had been invited to a bachelerette party for their friend and this friend was requesting (requiring?) that they all wear a purple top and white bottoms. These girls were going on and on and on about how ridiculous it is that they had to go out and buy a purple shirt and white bottoms since neither of them had either one. Then they were speculating as to what would happen if they just went to Walmart and picked up a purple T-shirt and white sweat pants, or if they just didn't wear the requested colors at all. Now, I don't think that I would ever require my girls to wear certain colors, but I think that if I did ask them to, and any of them had a problem with it (didn't have the right clothing to fit the requirements and would have to go out and buy something) that they would hopefully just SAY that to me nicely such as, "Emily, that sounds nice, but I don't own any purple shirts and I really can't afford to go out and buy a purple shirt after having to travel to your wedding, buy a dress, etc." Then I would say, "Oh, I didn't realize this would be a hardship/issue for you. Of course we don't need to wear purple shirts, I just thought it would be cute/fun." I mean, does it seem silly to any of you that these girls would sit there and b*tch to their other friends for like twenty minutes about how horrible it is that they have to go out and buy a purple shirt and pants or else not show up in purple, rather than just TALKING to their friend? I don't know; it just seemed odd to me.

Re: What do you all think of this?

  • It's not really surprising.  We women are people pleasers but we also love to be martyrs.  It's the 'can you believe the things I do for her' comments that make us feel better.  :-)I'm only half kidding.  Yes, it would be MUCH better to just say, "Come on!  That idea is crazy!"
  • It's been my experience as a BM that I won't call a bride out on her craziness unless it's really over the top.  What they're describing is a minor annoyance at worst.  Frankly, I don't think it's that big a deal and I'd be happy to do it for a good friend.  So these girls must not be very good friends of the bride and/or people who were asked just to bump up the numbers.

  • You know I would not ruin a friends party over it either and I would complain as I do not own purple top or white pants too. And sometimes it is not the bride but the moh who may not be a friend of everyone there. So the bride might not have any say in this or it may be a surprise. So yes the friends might not be friends with the organizer
  • I am not surprised either... And I really wished I owned white pants, but I am afraid to buy them because I know I would stain them immediately.  I really need to learn how to use bleach, but it scares me too...

  • I'm not surprised.  That's pretty much on par with what most of the girls I know would do.  It is an outlandish request, but they are going to put up with it b/c the love the bride, but they are venting their frustration at having to.  They probably feel like it is small enough that they aren't going to bother calling their friend out on it, and don't want it to be a fight, but it doesn't mean it isn't annoying.  Plus, no one wants to be "that girl" that won't just do it.This is why "I had all my BMs do x, y and z and none of them complained about it" doesn't really mean anything.
