We are going back to my hometown out of state for our wedding. My fiance doesn't really have anyone out there who can be in the wedding party and doesn't know if the few friends he has out here will be able to make it. I know you don't have to be even with your bridal party, but 5 bridesmaids to 1 groomsman seems very lopsided don't you think?

Seems fine. And tell your fiance he can ask his OOT friends if he really wants to, and leave it up to them whether they're able to swing it.

i have seen something like this before. all the girls walked up the aisle alone and then sat in the front row, and the maid of honour stayed standing at the front as did the one groomsman (best man?)

It won't be a big deal. Have the girls walk solo, groomsman can wait up front, groomsman and MOH can stand on the altar while the other girls sit, then groomsman can escort MOH out at the end while the other girls go solo or in side-by-side pairs. The photographer will arrange everyone nicely for photos.

They can just be single file and that's OK.

ditto the other smart ladies here.  WP's are not about symmetry.  There are plenty of ways to "choreograph" the walks, and a photographer can make your pictures work!
