BM Dresses Sample Sizes

I don't know if anyone else is having this problem, but I started looking for BM dresses and two of my girls went to try some on with me. The problem is many of the sample dresses were size 8. Some of my girls can make it into an 8 for trying on purposes, but two of my girls can't get these dresses on at all and I'm worried about ordering dresses without the girls trying them on. Anyone else running into this problem? How are you dealing? Thanks!

Re: BM Dresses Sample Sizes

  • Ran into it and it was pretty depressing for two of my bridesmaids. I ended up (with input) selecting a dress from department stores. All of the girls were able to try on different sizes and as far as I could tell, none felt too horrible afterward. These bridal stores just don't seem to have the space to keep a wide range of sizes. They should wise up and just go with a bigger sample size. The smaller girls can use clothespins if necessary.
  • I also had this problem. 2 of my BM weren't able to see what the dresses looked like on so they found a dress (I had them all choose different dresses in the same color) in a style that they liked and thought would look best on them. They were measured and the dresses were ordered in the size recommended. When the dresses came in they had the necessary alterations (a little tweaking) to make them fit properly.

  • I went through David's Bridal (I know a lot of people hate them around here, but I love them). My BMs range from sizes 6-14 and I noticed that they kept a wide range of sizes for the BM dresses on the racks for such reasons. I mean, one of my girls had to try on the dress in the wrong color, but she was able to figure out her size pretty easily based on their rack dresses.I had a very bad experience once with having to order a dress based off the sample dress in the store. The sample was a 14, there was no smaller size in the store. I only needed a 6, the sales associate insisted on ordering me a 10 because based off my "measurements", and of course when the dress came in too big she wanted to charge me another $150 to have it altered. Before the alterations the dress (Which was hideouse and I will NEVER wear again) cost me $170 ... so needless to say, I was pretty ticked about the whole situation. After that I pretty much swore I would never buy a dress again without trying it on in a more "realstic" area of the size spectrum, and I pretty much reccomend the same to everybody else. If you want them to order something, make sure they actually try something on the either fits or is close to fitting (As in they can EASILY determine "Oh, I need 1 size bigger/smaller" ... NEVER more than 1 size). I strongly advise against having them order something they did not try on.

  • David's and Alfred Angelo usually have a pretty decent array of sample sizes.  If you're planning on buying somewhere else, you can at least try on similar styles and get an idea of how they'll look before you order.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • Thanks everyone! Not really sure what I'm going to do. I wasn't thrilled with the dresses at David's. I want tea-length and my girls want thick straps. So that doesn't give me a lot of options. Bill Levkoff has some dresses I like. Maybe I'll see if David's has a similar dress even if its long just to see how the style fits.
  • Ask your local board for recommendations on salons that carry bigger sample sizes. I did this for my own gown. (My BMs will likely wear dresses from a department store or a regular clothing store, though, so I didn't ask about bigger BM samples.)

  • I ran into the same problem at one of the dress shops.  All the samples were 12s.  Which, didn't work for my two size 18 bridesmaids or my tiny size 2 cousin.  So, we didn't get the dresses there.  There were several other dress shops that had a better assortment and gave much better customer service.  I think the PP had a good idea with checking on your local board for recommendations of dress shops in your area.  Good luck.
