Wedding Party

No bridesmaids?

Hello everyone,I am interested in knowing whether or not any of you have had a “traditional” wedding without bridesmaids and groomsmen. My fiancé and I have strained relationships with our siblings and do not want them in our wedding. At the same time, we do not want to ask anyone else to stand in their place and further hurt their feelings, so we are considering not having a bridal party at all. Have any of you done this or seen this done? Thank you so much for the feedback

Re: No bridesmaids?

  • BP is totally optional . If you do not want one you do not need one you may need someone to sign the liscense but not a WP at all. Relax and skip it if you are happiest that way
  • You absolutely do not need to have attendants.  It will save you a lot of drama, as well as money on gifts, rehearsal dinner, and any other expenses you'd need to cover for them.  You will need to have witnesses to sign your license (which are traditionally your MOH and best man), but your parents, or anyone else you choose, can do that just as well.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I appreciate both of your responses- thank you!!
  • My sister and BIL had no WP. I thought it was lovely, and had I not already been married, would have seriously considered it. I don't think you'll be sorry at all.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • My aunt didn't have any BMs for her second wedding, and that marriage is much stronger than the first one where she did have BMs.

  • I think your idea is lovely. Do what works for you. I have 2 BM and FI has 4 grooms men. My BM are both married with young children so BM duties consist only of showing up, wearing dress and listening to me talk about wedding. Good luck!
  • "Traditional" is a totally relative term ... and honestly, ought to be thrown out the window because nobody's weding is every 100% the same as anyone else's. Your idea is great. Go for it! If you need people to sign the license as your witness(es), any adult who witnessed the ceremony can do that.

  • It's becoming more common these days, it seems. My friend's sister and her husband decided to forgo the whole WP thing and it was just them up there for their ceremony. Which is actually quite nice, I think, since the ceremony is about the bride & groom entering their marriage together.  Bottom line is do whatever works best for you and how and FI feel most relaxed and comfortable about for your special day.

  • We're not having a wedding party and I seriously think it was the best decision ever.  No WP drama, no finding BM dresses that suit everyone, no hurt feelings from people not chosen.  Plus, it means we can be more flexible with our colours. Our two best friends are acting as our witnesses and a couple of other friends are doing readings.
  • THANK YOU everyone for all of your input! I appreciate it and I am glad that you all offered your advice!! : )
