Wedding Party

What do you call..

the person who helps the bride with her dress down the aisle?I don't think I've ever posted on here before but I am wondering how to include my FI's little cousin in the ceremony. She really wants to be a part of the wedding but is too old to be a flower girl and too young to be a junior bridesmaid. She has already been an aisle runner in FI's brother's wedding so I was thinking she would enjoy being the person who helps carry the bride's train down the aisle.I'm not sure what we would list that as in the program. Thank you!

Re: What do you call..

  • Brideslave? That's not an honor - it's a job. Either include her in the wedding party or don't, but don't make up titles/jobs for people. Lat time I checked, there were no age limits on wedding party members.

  • It's ok Stage :) I think it's one thing if the kid WANTS to do it, but the way OP sounded, it was like she was trying to "fit the kid in somewhere" because there wasn't any place else. I fail to see what age the child is that she doesn't "fit" as either a flower girl or a Jr. Bridesmaid

  • I did it in my aunt's wedding, I felt honored to be a part of it. She's 9 and feels uncomfortable being a flower girl or a bridesmaid but wants to be included in the ceremony. If you see it as a job, fine. She would like a "job."
  • I don't see no harm in that, if she wants to do something like that and it excites her then def do it.
  • A page..... maybe you could call her a bridal attendant? I mean, usually bridal attendants do more than just carry the train down the aisle, but I think that title might be a sweet gesture. I just think bridal attendant sounds better than page for young girls, I dunno why. Like, the word page just sounds blunt and obvious, while bridal attendant sounds more important and glorious... I can't explain it, sorry. It makes sense in my head though. :)And, yeah, depending on the age, she might get a huge kick out of doing something like that. To some it might seem like menial labor, but to others it can be a treat. you can always just ask her and see what she wants. There are really no cut-off ages for flower girls and bridesmaids (junior or otherwise) so if she would prefer one of those positions, then why not let her have that position? It's up to you, of course, but I always suggest talking it over with the person, if it's negotiable.

  • How young is too young to be a junior bridesmaid?  Mine is going to be 9
  • Ditto PP - but make sure it's something that she actually wants to do.   She's been an aisle runner?  The image of her laying down so people can walk on her is making me laugh at my desk.  :-)   When I was younger, I was a reader and was really touched to be one.
  • banana, I was thinking the same thing about the aisle runner.
  • Haha I don't know what you would call it- the aisle runner runner? The aisle runner layer-downer? My bad on the wording- she was titled aisle runner in that wedding- I never thought of how it sounded haha. She doesn't want to be a flower girl or a junior bridesmaid because she feels awkward. The other flower girl is 3 and the other junior bridesmaid is 12. If she wanted one of those positions she could certainly have it but she doesnt like the age difference. She still wants to be in the ceremony. I like the bridal attendant title as well. :) Thanks!
  • isufans4ever- personally, I think it depends on their comfort level, I don't think there are definite age cut-offs for a junior bridesmaid.
  • I would just ask her what she wants to do if she doesn't want to be a flower girl, and then make up a title that sounds good from there. Just make sure she wants to do whatever role she plays. If she doesn't like the idea of carrying the train, there's always being a reader. If you're doing a Catholic ceremony she can be a gift-giver. I have no idea what it called, but I know there's this thing people do with pouring sand, she might enjoy doing that. I'm not sure how old she is, but if you can trust her with a candle (Or if somebody helps her with this) she could always help light the unity candle. Also, if she liked being an aisle runner last time (I have no clue what they're actually called), you can let her do that again. There's no rule saying you can't do the same thing twice ... otherwise, I'm sure there are millions of women out there that wouldn't have nearly as many BM horror stories to tell, haha.

  • train bearer?
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • If you want something more fanciful, maybe "lady in waiting?"

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I found this through google Ring Bearer or Train BearerIt is not necessary to have either a ring or train bearer.  However if you do know one or two cute little boys who are about four or five, you may want them to take part.   The ring bearer or train bearer may also be a little girl!  If so, she should be dressed the same as the flower girl.  The duties of the Ring Bearer are to carry the ring or rings tied by a ribbon on a satin or lacey pillow.  The Ring Bearer may walk alone or with the flower girl, but precedes the bride.  The Train Bearer carries the bridal gown train, following the bride.

Repeat this to your self: My Wedding Party is made of my family and friends and I should treat them as such.
  • I like train bearer better than aisle runner runner. Saying aisle runner runner sounds like it's from the Department of Redundancy Department.
  • oooh, "Lady in Waiting" sounds nice, too!

  • I did that in a family friend's wedding when I was about 10 or 11 and I loved it! It was just enough involvement and I felt very honored. I think I was an attendant but I honestly don't remember and I doubt she will too.
  • Honestly, page and lady-in-waiting sound odd to me. Way to old-fashioned or something. A little girl probably doesn't even know what a page is. Train bearer also sounds strange b/c she isn't bearing your train right??? I vote for attendant.
  • To me, the title page evokes images of little boys delivering messages from the king to the noblemen. That might be an old-fashioned image, but it's the truth.

  • P.S. I was totally joking about the aisle runner runner... that would look like a typo in the program and it just sounds silly. It's not a long train so she would just hold it as I started to walk down and then follow my dad and I. FI's mother feels she would absolutely love it, I just wanted to find out a title before I asked her. Thanks everyone!
  • A "Page" is typically a boy. Not that a girl couldn't do the same job, I'm just not sure they would be called the same thing.
  • Now that I think of it:  a Senate or House page can be a boy or girl as well.
