Usher dilemma!

OK, in our wedding party, we have six bridesmaids, six groomsmen, 2 flower girls, one ring bearer and two ushers. We will have approximately 250 guests at the wedding... here is my dilemma...

One of the groomsmen just got enlisted into the military. He isn't sure he can make it to the wedding, but still really wants to be a part of it if he is able to come, and we really want him to be a part of it too...

SO- the solution that I came up with is to have three ushers... This way, if our groomsman can't make it to the wedding, then one of the ushers can move into the groomsmen position, leaving two ushers. I just don't like the idea of asking someone to be an usher last minute. Any other better solutions out there????

We are wanting our ushers and groomsmen to be dressed identical, is that a normal practice? I thought it was until i was reading some websites! I dont want to be asking too much! 

I could totally use an outsider's input!!!!   Thank you all so much, and happy planning! :-)

The best solution, IMO, is to not shuffle people around. If your GM can't make it, then you still list him in the program and just have one less guy standing up there.

</div><div>You don't need to have only 2. Don't ask someone for symmetry. If he can't make it, just put him in the program as an honorary usher. I do think that with 250 guests, you should have 3 ushers anyway.
 </div><div>But your wedding isn't until October. How could you even know if that many people are coming?! Answer: you don't. Unless you've sent out the invites already which I highly doubt and hope you didn't. Just leave it at 2 if you only have 2 in mind.</div>

</div><div>As far as attire, every wedding I have been to, the groomsmen and ushers wear the same thing (which has always been tuxedos). However, I am in the minority on this board. Most of the regular posters on this board usually see ushers in any suit they already own. I think it is up to you, your fiance, and your ushers to decide.</div>

You do not need even sides!  WP actually look more symmetrical if there is one less gm.

Your WP is made up of those that are your closest and dearest friends and family members.  How do you think the gm will feel if he is replaced and how do you think the new guy will feel as the back-up?

This is my DH and his gm. They are all wearing different tuxes that were all hanging in their closets from their own weddings. Can you tell?

Just keep things however they are, and just go on with whoever you may have on the wedding day.

Some people have both the GMs and ushers in the same outfits, others do not. Your call. Your FI can talk to the guys and see what's the most practical and cost-effective for them.

Another suggestion, if your soldier groomsman would be in a time crunch to get a tux, would be for him to just wear his dress uniform. Plenty of wedding parties have military and civilian guys mixed, and it looks fine. Everyone will appreciate and respect his service

Asking someone to step up to replace a GM at the last minute is very rude.  "Hey you weren't good enough to be a GM before, but since our original choice couldn't make it..."  Don't replace the GM if he can't make it.  If you have uneven sides as a result that is OKAY.
