Help! Choosing Bridesmaids

Not sure what to do, hoping for some insight.

Recently began planning our wedding and I'm having issues determining who to have in my party.  It comes down to having a childhood friend who I havn't really seen/talked to much in the past 5 years but knows me better than most, and a friend that I've had for the past 3 years that I talk to on a daily basis (co-worker).  I think the easiest answer is having both...but that will put me at 4 bridesmaids + a matron of honor.  I know that's not a crazy amount, but it was one more than I was originally thinking.

I'm very new to this whole planning process so I may just be way to overwhelmed at this point :-)  Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue and how it was resolved and if you were happy with your ultimate choices.

Thanks!

Re: Help! Choosing Bridesmaids

  • When is your wedding? If it's more than 10 months away (meaning, you've booked your venues and put down deposits, not just said, "Hey, September would be a nice wedding date!"), then you still have time to make this decision.

Just choose your closest friends, regardless of the numbers. You don't need even sides and you don't need to fulfill a quota. Who are your absolute dearest friends?

If you have to talk yourself into having someone, then it's probably a sign that you shouldn't have her. Don't choose between two good friends, though - if you are equally close to them then have them both. You don't need to see or talk to someone every day for her to be a very close friend. And don't choose based on who you see most often or who is/will be the best wedding planner for you.

And you can always start out small, think about it some more, then add someone else if you really keep thinking that you want her up there with you. But once you ask, you can't un-ask, so choose wisely.

  • I agree with MBCDEFG. You need to choose those who you have wonderful relationship and choose wisely.
  • Thanks for your input everyone!  I didn't realize that I was sort of jumping the gun with trying to make this decision immediately.  The tentative date is Sep. 14, 2013, so I have a few months until I really need to figure this one out.
    Thanks again!
