Boutonnieres on a shirt - no jacket???

Our groomsmen are not wearing jackets - just button down shirts and ties. My husband-to-be is insisting on boutonnieres but where do you put them on a shirt? I think this will look odd. Has anyone seen this done? Does it look ok?

  • I can't imagine it looking anything but redneck.  Sorry.

  • You are correct- it will look stupid.

  • Thank you both! I completely agree with the redneck comment. Just wanted to be sure I wasn't being ridiculious before I completely nixed his idea.
  • If they wore vests I could possibly see them being pinned to that. It still might look odd, but certainly better than on a shirt.

  • I'm pretty sure that I didn't marry a redneck and saying something is "stupid" is beyond insulting to anyone.

Here is a pic of BM & MOH....notice it's pinned to his shirt:

Here is a picture of hubby.....note he is not a redneck either.

  • I was at a wedding this summer where the groomsmen wore boutonnieres on button up collared shirts, I definitely didn't think it was redneck at all. The only issue I saw was that the flower was too heavy for the material of the shirt so they fell down easily. I would recommend using a smaller flower that is bright in color so it pops.

<div>This.  A traditional rose bout is going to flop around and might look a bit homecoming-dance-ish, but something flat and lightweight and more modern-looking would look great.  Maybe a lavender spray, some greenery or hypericum berries (the berries might get a little heavy).  And it depends on the material of the shirt- a crisp heavy cotton shirt will hold a lightweight bout just fine, but a silk or hawaiian-type shirt probably won't.</div><div>
</div><div>You can also use something non-floral, I've seen really cool handmade pinwheels, ribbon bouts and metal pins on etsy, martha stewart weddings, and stylemepretty.</div>

[QUOTE]Boutonnieres are meant to be pinned on jackets .  If you are going to be so informal as to have the guys in shirtsleeves, then bouts are not appropriate.

Sorry but I had a pretty formal wedding....and since it was a beach wedding, shortsleeves were much more appropriate.  We all have different opinions though.

  • Having a bout as well as a tie without having any additional layers other than a shirt would look too jumbled.  Just a tie will do .
  • My fi's uncle got married and did bout on shirts and it looked just fine and wasn't a redneck thing at all. Fi is a redneck, and if he wanted to marry that way, there would've been a bout at all.
