  • That's so messed up. Her peers already were SO mean to her. This is just insult to injury. Poor girls.

  • That is really sad. How humiliating. And how horrible of the other students to treat her that way.

That is awful. So upsetting people can behave like that.
  • It sounds like the parents were the ones that organized everything.  That makes it even worse in my opinion.

  • That poor girl.  I can't believe those idiots were so cruel to her.  Parents and teachers "faking" prom so she couldn't go?  Sounds like a nasty adolescent trick out of a Sweet Valley High novel.

  • As a society we think we have come such a long way. This just goes to show you that people are still as close-minded and hurtful as ever.

  • Two students with learning difficulties were among the seven people at the country club event, McMillen recalls. "They had the time of their lives," McMillen says. "That's the one good thing that come out of this, [these kids] didn't have to worry about people making fun of them [at their prom]."

If anything, I guess that's some good news.  But still, it makes me sick to my stomach that PARENTS were in charge, and not only were ok with this behavior, THEY organized it.  Seriously, who thinks they are so great that they have the authority to decide that a lesbian and some kids with learning difficulties aren't good enough to come to the super secret prom?  That is awful and cruel.
  • I read this earlier today and it made me so incredibly mad. How is it that people can justify treating another human being this way? Those excuse-for-parents should be ashamed of themselves. You are supposed to set an example for your children, and sending the message that spreading hate is okay is absolutely unacceptable. How small of them.

  • Saxy- the article said that the kids with learning difficulties were not made fun of at the fake prom.  Does that mean the other students would have been making fun of them at the regular prom?  How horrible.  Even when I was in high school, I knew better than that.

Ugh. Parents are just as disgusting as children. Remember that woman who made a fake myspace page that led to the suicide of one of her child's peers?

    ...disgusting.
  • I remember that the school canceled the prom to start because she wanted to bring her gf. Then all the students were upset and telling her "Thanks a lot for ruining my prom." I feel if the school hadn't canceled it in the first place, a lot of this hate crime could have been avoided. I don't know, I like to think that everyone accepts gay people now...it's weird when someone has a problem with another person's preference in the bedroom.

  • That's what I understood it as--though that is absolutely horrible, and it's difficult for me to get my head around the thought processes being used there.  I come from a small, pretty conservative town, and I knew better than that, too.  There's really no excuse for what happened.

  • Yeah, I saw this earlier today.  It's just disgusting how people will go out of their way to be cruel.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284

Meghan Meier.  That was so incredibly sad.  That woman was completely sick and immature.

  • Stina, unfortunately, I still think we're a long ways away from full acceptance.

This whole thing is disgusting.  I don't see what difference it makes if someone brings a same-sex date to prom.  It's a freakin' dance, not a live sex show.
