Wedding Party

What should the ushers wear

So I'm not sure what the Ushers should wear. I have been the multiple weddings over the past 2 years and they have all done something different. I've been to some where they wear the same tux as the groomsmen and others where they just wear a nice suit and a shirt and tie that go with the wedding colors. What are ya'll having your ushers wear? My fiance was recently a usher and had to wear a tux but was I kind of upset about it since he really didn't do much in the wedding and still had to spend all that money. What are ya'lls thoughts?

My ushers wore whatever they wanted to. Since they're not part of the bridal party, neither me nor my DH get to dictate what they wear. They both wore suits they already owned.

Unless your wedding is very (black tie) formal, suits they have would do just fine. You could throw the colors out there and see if they can work with it without buying something new.

This is exactly why I think it's best to let them wear any dark suit of their choosing.

edit: or don't have ushers at all. Our groomsmen will do this.

My usher will wear whatever clothes he wants. I am positive it wont even be a suit & that is for a catholic church wedding & he is catholic.

  • Ours wore slacks and white shirts, and I got them ties in our colors.

I wouldn't have felt comfortable asking them to rent tuxes if they weren't even GM.
  • My brothers are going to be the ushers.  They both own suits, so when I go home in Sept, I plan to take them both shopping to get them a new shirt and tie that matches our wedding colors.  I don't expect them to pay for a rental.  I'm also paying for their new duds, but that's because I'm their sister and would like to.  I think you should just have them wear their own suit or a button up shirt with slacks, depending on the formality of your wedding.

Our ushers and GM are wearing dark suits, and we will give them a tie to wear.  Seemed easiest thing to do since they all own suits already.
  • Our 2 ushers wore dark suites that they already owned.

We have one female and one male usher. We are having a Catholic mass so they are also going to be our gift bearers (bring up wine and bread before communion). The female usher was told to pick any black or grey dress (groomsmen are in grey) and the male usher is going to wear the same tux as the groomsmen. I told FI I would have been fine with the usher in a suit but FI was in charge of his guys attire and he really wanted him in the tux and the usher is kind of a formal guy who's normal attire is a suit so he seemed to expect to rent a tux for the wedding anyway.

I also think it depends on how you treat your ushers. I understand being upset about having to spend money on the same attire as the wedding party but then not being treated as part of the wedding party. We made sure to include room in our wedding party transportation for our ushers (and dates). We are spending just as much on their thank you gifts. They will be seated with the rest of the wedding party and dates, etc.

  • I'd have to go back and look at pictures to tell you what they wore.  Basically, they wore what the would have worn if they weren't ushers, didn't coordinate with each other or the wedding colors.  Everyone still knew their role because they were the only two guys at the end of the aisle saying "let me show you to a seat".

We are having 3 ushers, two of them are wearing black slacks, white button-up shirt, and we will buy them ties in our colors...our 3rd usher we don't know for sure if he will make it in time for the ceremony (he's in the army, stationed in TN, and doesn't get his leave until the day of our wedding). However, if he arrives, he will be wearing his uniform...we'll give them all boutonierre's to wear too :)
