Wedding Party

WR, but not WPR...WWYD?

I've been trying to decide if I should cart my wedding dress out to California with me.

If I do, it will be much easier to get alterations done when the time comes, because I could just get them done in CA. However, I'm concerned about transporting the thing out to CA, then back to MN...I don't want it to get crushed or something.

If I don't, I would have to worry about somehow getting alterations done in Minnesota before the wedding, and I'm just not sure how much I'll be in Minnesota before the wedding. I imagine we'll visit once over the summer, but probably before that the only time would maybe be Christmas. We will probably arrive in MN about a week before the wedding...would that be doable? It just sounds stressful.

Ugh. WWYD?

  • Can you ship it ahead of you, and then have it shipped back?  I know a lot of girls from the Vegas board are coming in from all over the place, so they have their dress shipped to a particular alterations/steaming place, where it gets pressed before the wedding.  And if you're shipping it, you can pack it yourself and label it fragile so you can be sure it arrives in one piece.

If you take it to California, you'll still probably want to find a place in MN that can steam and press it for you before the wedding, but that won't take nearly as long as full alterations will.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. • I bought my dress in NYC, got it altered here, and then had the company ship it to my parents. It was very stress free. They even had tracking confirmation so I knew where the dress was. If you're comfortable with this, I would do it. I had to have it steamed when it arrived because it was in a box, but I had it real easy.

  • I'd probably want to get the alterations where I live, so I can see that.

But I'd definitely ship it rather than fly with it.  I flew with my dress to Peru.  Giant pain in the ass.  Those things are freaking heavy, yo!
  • I'd do what everyone's suggested so far.

MNIN, I'm not looking forward to the giant wedding dress carry-on (cause no way in hell am I checking it) to CA and back this summer. If we weren't doing TTD photos back in Santiago I'd leave it at my dad's house...argh, just thinking about it sounds frustrating.
  • Can you ship it, Emily?  I would have if I'd had time.

But you're right, they lost my bags.  I'm glad I didn't check it!
  • I don't check ANYTHING when I'm flying if I can at all avoid it.  I try to shove as much into my carry-on as I possibly can.  I've heard too many horror stories.
