Wedding Party

Bridesmaids or no bridesmaids? Destination wedding

I'm planning on having my wedding somewhere in Mexico. I want to have the wedding on the beach. I'm not sure if I should have any bridesmaids at all since now they have to spend money to travel, and stay in Mexico. Is it okay to just have a MOH??

  • Totally okay and eminently appropriate given the circumstances.  Nothing boggles my mind more than brides who try to re-create a big church wedding on the beach.

  • I voted for no bridal party at all because that's what we did for our DW in Las Vegas. We just couldn't justify the added cost on top of the travel. Plus -- and this is just my opinion -- I was 35 when we got married (DH was 44, his second marriage), and I think (again, just one gal's opinion) that once you get past a certain age (in my opinion, 30) having the pretty princess day with all your BFFs standing up next to you in matching clothes reeks of pathetic desperation. Your mileage may vary. So my reasoning on having no bridal party at all was two-fold.

And dear God, do you know what a relief it was to not have to deal with any of that? No picking out BM dresses or GM tuxes, no asking anybody to stand up, no dealing with the bridal party drama that you read about in every third post on this board...

  • I think it's fine to just have a MOH.

IMO, I think when you pick a remote destination wedding, you know that you may have fewer people there.  And it's fine to have a BP too - but you need to know that you're most likely going to have people decline when you have a destination wedding.
  • Having a MOH and no other BM is fine.  Just make sure when you ask say something about it being ok if she can't make it since it's in another country.  This way she won't feel obligated to say yes.

  • I had 3 MOHS (I didnt like the idea of ranking or selecting one over the others).
We had a DW as well. 2 of them traveled for the ceremony (their choice) 1 did not.

At the AHR, all three of them were in attendance.

  • We have 6 on my side and 4-5 on FI's (depending on if his brother shows) at our DW.  It's a domestic DW and most of them would have been traveling anyway, and we limited the guest list to just WP and family.

If you want bridesmaids and they would be willing/able to make the trip, awesome.  If you prefer to just have a MOH or no attendants at all, also awesome.  If you want to ask and let them accept or decline as their finances permit, awesome again.  WP is totally up to you.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
