Wedding Party

dress fabric

I want to have my bridesmaids in black. I also don't mind letting them choose their own dress so that they will feel comfortable and beautiful in what they end up wearing.

Should I pick a fabric for them to work with, or does it make a big difference? My fiance and I are not terribly picky, but don't know if different fabrics will really change the looks of the dresses from girl to girl.

Re: dress fabric

  • I'd go to a bridal store and look at the different fabrics. You'll get an idea of what you like when it is up close and side by side.  Personally I like having all the same fabric. I looked at a chiffon dress next to a satin one and it didn't mesh in my colors. Just take a gander and see what you like.

  • I prefer the same fabric, but that's really just a personal preference.
  • I don't think it will really make a difference with black but if you want to choose a specific fabric I definitely don't think it will be asking too much. There will still be a lot of options out there for your bms  :)

Like suz62984 said, a color can look different in different fabrics. Jsut check out a few black dresses in a variety fabrics and decide if you like the way they look next to each other.www.theknot.com/?utm_source=ticker&utm_medium=HTML&utm_campaign=tickers"><img" />

I don't mind the look of different fabrics together with black dresses but that's just me.  If you want the girls to be able to get their dresses anywhere then say only black satin/taffeta or no satin/taffeta because they tend to be the shiny fabrics.  Anything else will blend nicely together.

  • I have a picture on my desk of me, my mom, and my sister at a party, all wearing LBDs.  You totally can't tell the difference in the fabric, and we look like we match.

I don't remember what our dresses were all made of, but I do remember that they were all very different.

  • I'd stick with one kind of fabric, probably satin.  Even black has many different shades across different fabric types, and even dye lots among a certain type of fabric.  If you don't mind minor variations in black, that would work.  If you want all the same shade of black, I'd recommend them getting them from the same designer and order at the same time so they are from the same dye lot.
  • I don't think it makes a huge difference with black.  I told my girls any black dress; one has chiffon, one has lace over satin, and honestly I have no idea what the other three are wearing.  Other colors definitely can vary on different fabric, but it's much less noticeable with black.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
