What colors?

Our wedding isn't for about 2 years but when things at work get crazy and chaotic, I like to plan in order to destress. We are getting married in September of 2014 on a boat. My absolute favorite flower is an orange daylily and I want them included in my bouquets... problem is I hate the color orange. Ironic. (The flowers remind me of home and are comforting to me)
I decided that a mix of orange daylilies and coral roses would soften the harsh orange color against the ivory of my dress (an elegant, vintage lace mermaid cut).

What I'm getting to is this: what colors do you think would work well with the coral/orange mix?
I've always liked earth tones but my favorite color is sea glass blue. I'm just not the type to go for a lot of color so right now I'm stuck choosing between my favorite flower and my favorite color. My fiance and I want to keep and elegant, vintage, romantic feel to the wedding. What to do, what to do?

Sorry for the novel, I just don't want to ask my friends and get their biased opinions. :)

Re: What colors?

  • If you're not sure how they'd look with dresses, you can use them as centerpiece flowers instead.  Or, you can carry the orange bouquet and your maids can carry similar ones in a different color.

Blue and orange are complementary colors (see: half of movie posters released since about 2005) so they'd look fine together.  You could also put the bridesmaids in a nice brown color and bring in the blue elsewhere.  Basically, you have a lot of options, depending on costs, preferences, availability, things like that.

I also had a two year engagement, and I speak from somewhat bitter experience: Don't get too attached to your plans at this point.  We had the whole wedding pretty much planned fairly early on, then had to throw everything out the window and start again from scratch halfway through.  It's perfectly fine to dream about wedding stuff, but life happens, and ditching all of that hard work hurts.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284

A fellow June bride had her girls wearing blue carrying orange lilies...it was gorgeous!

Also, for a fall wedding, you may run into issues with lilies. But...since it is fall and your favorite flower is orange, why not go for fallish colors? Reds, greens, golds, oranges? I also used orange lilies and mixed them with red roses and orange, yellow, pink and red gerberas.

Ohhh!! ohhhh!!!  I was married Sept 2011 at the beach, and our colors were teal & tangerine and the BM's carried orange asiatic lilies!  The colors were soooo pretty together and said "end of summer wedding" everywhere.

    Here are some pics:

  • Thank you for your help :)
I think what I'm going to do is make sure that the flowers I want are in season first before I plan my whole color scheme around them! If I can't get them in September I don't know what I'll do... I finally decided on chocolate brown, coral, and a Tiffany blue
