Ushers---how many?

I'll be having ~200 guests at my wedding and I'm just wondering how many ushers I'll need. My problem is I have 4 cousins, 2 are 18 years old and the other 2 are 16. We're thinking of just having the older 2, but I think the other 2 will feel left out. Are 4 ushers too much? Any other suggestions for the younger 2?

Thanks!

Re: Ushers---how many?

  • traditionally it would be 1 usher per 50 guests.  If you'll also have groomsmen, a lot of weddings I've attended have some or all of the groomsmen also assist with seatings.
  • Either your GMs can double as ushers, or you can have all 4. Like PP said, the general rule is 50 people per usher. I think the 16yo cousins would probably liek to be ushers, and can hopefully conduct themselves in a appropriate manner for that long.

  • Usually it is suggested that you have 1 usher for every 50 people.  Whether or not that is actually required, I have no idea.  We had 175 guests and only 2 ushers and everything was fine.

As for the teenagers feeling left out; they won't.  If I had to guess they probably would prefer not to be involved, but I don't know them personally.  But, I don't know any 16 year old that would honestly be upset about not being an usher in their cousin's wedding.
  • 1 for 50 can work just fine.

If you want to include all of them then that's great.  I don't love it when I see family members split into those who are in the WP and those who aren't but that's because of old guilt I have of being in weddings when my younger brother wasn't.
  • I am having about 250 people and we are having 4 ushers
  • We are having 4 ushers for 200 guests.  I wanted everyone escorted and not to have the aisle disturbed, since it will lined with flower petals and candles.

It depends on how much guidance you think your guests will need.  And if there will be enough to keep your ushers busy.  They can also hand out programs and be there to help with your entrance ( ie open doors, cue music etc)

    But I agree 1 per 50 guests......
