Re: wedding colors

  • Honestly, it's too early to be choosing colors for your wedding.  You will change your mind 100 times between now and the wedding.

The best way to get ideas on what you like is to stick arond these boards and look at poster's bios.  Save any pictures that you like for inspiration, but don't run with any ideas right now.

Holy Crap. We survived the first year!

  • I'd definitely start looking right now, but I wouldn't decide anything until you're at the one year mark or so.  That's still plenty of time to make some major purchases that are in your color scheme.

FWIW, I knew I'd be going with black dresses since before DH and I were engaged.  (yes, I was one of THOSE brides) but I didn't know anything about colors to put with them until we were enagaged.

  • When I first got engaged, I "knew" our colors would be green and black.  Six months later, when my BMs and I were dress shopping and couldn't find a green we liked, the colors wound up being coral, gold, and ivory.  Be flexible!  And don't necessarily let the season dictate--a good friend of mine had a lovely black and white wedding in the middle of summer.

DB has some pinks. They have watermelon, guava and azalea which are very bright colors. My BFF is pairing a very similar color at DB, which has just been discontinued, with champagne and ivory. Granted, those two are neutral but they will make the shades of pink pop even more.

I also love lime green with pink. Definitely go to the palette website pooh said, it is a godsend.

I would personally stay away from yellow because that does not good bridesmaid dresses make in my opinion and therefore you would still need another primary color for the dresses anyway.

  • That website is incredible, thanks for sharing!
  • I agree with PPs that you shouldn't decide on anything (colors, BMs, BM dresses) for a long time, but it doesn't hurt to start thinking.

If by the time you're looking at dresses (ie. in a year or so) you're still not totally set on your colors, see what looks good on your BMs and let that help you make the decision.
  • see, I disagree on waiting to decide on stuff. by the time the wedding gets here, I'll have been engaged for over 2 years. I was engaged for a year before I started signing contracts, but that entire year beforehand, I was researching my options. I knew which colors I wanted long before FI and I had even met. the first wedding related money put down was the shoes that I would wear, several months before I even picked the venue. by the time I had to start making decisions and signing contracts, most of my decisions were already made and it was pretty easy--since I had already done my research.

  • Pooh, I think there are definitely some people who know what they want and can do what you did. I mean hell, I preach about waiting to ask your BMs, but I asked the day I told them I was engaged, and they're the same people I've known would be my BMs for years.

But if OP isn't sure and is asking for ideas in something as subjective as colors, I think she's probably going to change her mind a few times between now and next July and shouldn't lock herself into anything yet.
  • that's true, I didn't think of it that way. and I also asked my BMs the day I told them I was engaged.

  • I would wait until I booked my venue(s) before committing to wedding colors, but there is no harm in looking early on.

However, I ended up changing my colors after I saw the colors in the hotel, because my pastels would never work with the gold and red decor. If you are flexible in your colour selections, it will save money.  Using the colours in the venue is much cheaper then trying to flight them.

    Cheers
  • I chose my colors by taking my sister and SIL dress shopping.  We looked at all of the different choices and we were able to come up with one that we all loved.  Then I coordinated the rest of the colors to the dresses.  My colors wound up being Raspberry (dresses), lime, and silver.
