Another tux question

The last post about the tux made me think of a sepreate question. FI's father isn't wearing a tux, while I personally don't care what he wears (as long as its not jeans lol) some people have mentioned to me that this is strange. I thought a nice suit that he already owns is fine right?

Re: Another tux question

  • That is fine.  Whatever he feels comfortable in... Just like all of the MOB attire discussions.  It only wouldn't be fine if it where a black-tie affair.

My dad will be wearing a Tux and so will my Granddad.  I do not think that FI's dad will wear a tux, just a suit.

It's absolutely fine.  That's what my dad did at my sister's wedding last year.

  • My FIL wore one of his own suits instead of a tux.  I don't know why that's weird.  He's not part of the WP and can dress himself, just like MIL and my own parents (though my dad did opt for the tux).

  • I guess some people think that the FOB needs to match the groomsmen because he's walking you down the aisle, so he's (very technically) part of the ceremony.  But I think this is one of those cases of "If the bride doesn't care, why should you?"

We told the dads that they could either wear the tux we'd reserved or a suit they already owned.  Turned out none of them owned something suitable.  Dad and FIL went with the rental (which was fairly reasonable at $90), while Stepdad found a nice suit off eBay.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284

I agree with pp, I don't think it's strange to let him wear his own suit/tux.  For us, we're letting them know what tux the groomsmen are wearing...if they want to do the same they are more than welcome but certainly not a requirement.  I wouldn't think it would be odd though if he opted to wear his own suit.
  • I don't think it's a problem for your FI to inform his dad that your father will be wearing a tux, if your future father-in-law isn't already aware of this. And then FFIL can decide from there what he wants to do. (FI could invite him along if he and your dad and the groomsmen are getting fitted in a group.) Not as a "You need to wear a tux" thing, but just as more of a heads-up.

I only say this because, as an important wedding guest, I'd personally like to know how formal the other side was going to be so I could dress equally. I wouldn't want to show up in a casual cocktail dress and have my daughter-in-law's mother in a really fancy gown. It's not a matter of her showing me up, it's just a matter of me looking right for the occasion. If my husband was in a suit and our kid's father-in-law was in a tux along with the groom and groomsmen, I can picture my husband saying, "WTF, why didn't they tell ME that they were all going to get tuxes?"

If your FFIL already knows that your dad will be in a tux, and he's elected to wear a suit regardless, there's no problem with that.

  • Thanks guys, thats what I thought. FI's dad is aware that my father will be in a tux and he's just not into super formal wear.
  • I have never seen a FOG wear a tux.

  • Both of our father's wore tuxes bc they wanted to. A suit will be just fine and bc they are not part of the WP, it will also be fine in pictures as well.
  • My fiance's father and stepfather both want to wear tuxes matching the groomsmen. I don't know how my dad feels about it (I doubt he cares at all, he's not the type to care what he's wearing) but my mom is insisting he wear a coordinating suit. I think it'll look strange if one side has two "dads" in matching tuxes and my dad will stand out without one. I think I'm going to leave it up to him though if he wants to match the other two or go with my mother's plan.
