Purchasing BM Dresses - Question

I'm in the midst of planning my spring wedding and will be a BM in a good friend's wedding which is in August. This morning I received an email from her MOH saying that we really should plan to shop for and purchase our dresses before Christmas due to the rush that happens after the holidays (according to the consultant). How can I politely tell her that the consultant is just pushing for a sale?

This also makes me wonder if my timeframe for purshing my BMs dresses is too short. I was planning to purchase in January for my May wedding. Thoughts on this timeframe?

Thanks in advance. I've lurked on this board quite a bit and I'm sure there's nothing to panic about; I'm just hoping you ladies may be able to help calm my nerves now.

  • Shoot, if you shop now, you'll miss the post Christmas sale prices! Or boxing day if you're Canadian.

  • Hello, Your time frame sounds fine. My wedding is in August and we are going dress shopping this Saturday - It was NOT my idea my BM have been asking me weekly when they could go shopping, plus one of my BM is pregnant and wants to go shopping now, before she gets her big baby belly. If we purchase anything we will see I think they more or less just want to go spend an afternoon trying things on
  • We selected and ordered dresses in January for my May wedding.  The final order date was the end of February.  You should be perfectly fine.

I would respond and just say that you'd been looking into the same thing because of your upcoming (sooner) wedding, and are confident that there is really no need to order more than 3-4 months in advance, and say that the consultant may be pressuring her because she wants the commission for her own Christmas shopping.  Then add in something about spring styles coming out after the first of the year and after-Christmas sales.

  • I think it depends on what bridesmaid dresses you plan on ordering. I chose Amsale dresses and was told they take a full 4 months to come in, while other designers are much faster. You want to make sure to leave enough time for the girls to get alterations, etc. (However, I was told this by a consultant which means it could not be 100% accurate).
  • Just as a note for your timeline, my wedding is at the end of April and my last BM is ordering her dress this upcoming weekend.  We are ordering them through Alfred Angelo and when I was there two weeks ago the current ship date for the dresses was January 15th and then they would be at the store about 10 days later.  If anyone needs alterations they typically take 6 weeks or so, unless you pay for a rush job.  Also, if you find a dress that you love, or if they find a dress that they love you might as well just have them order it because dresses are discontinued all the time especially as the seasons change!
