Buying Bridesmaid Dresses Online

I have realized finding the right bridesmaids dress is harder than I imagined. I need chiffon tealength dresses with thicker straps (Catholic wedding). I can't find any in stores that meet this criteria for a reasonable price but I have found ones online. The issue is that they are from China. Have others ordered from online bridal companies overseas and found the quality to be alright? I am just really worried about this.

Re: Buying Bridesmaid Dresses Online

  • Most people have horror stories with ordering from the Chinese knockoff sites.

  • There are a few ways to approach this without resorting to Chinese knockoffs. I would personally advise you to start looking into Mother of the Bride categories, as I have noticed more demure dresses in length and cut there. Also, always keep in mind that sleeves can be added in alterations, and that long dresses can be shortened to any desired length. That way you get more options from legitimate vendors and still can make the dresses exactly what you want.

  • Do they have to be chiffon?  My BMs wore basically what you are looking for, but in a satin fabric.  They were from the Eden Maids line.  My dress was chiffon, but when we went looking for BM dresses, the BMs didn't find a dress in chiffon that everyone liked.  It looked fine that I had a chiffon dress and the BMs had a satin one.

Have you thought about having shawls for the girls during the ceremony to cover them up some more?

Also, have your tried looking in department stores for dresses?
  • Don't do it.  I made that mistake and it was a pain....The dresses were a horrible knockoff, poorly made and not close to the right color or even the right material.  Even though they were  guaranteed, it was a 2 month battle to get them to refund 2/3 of the amount.  Also, even if they easily refunded the money....don't forget how expensive it is to ship it back to China (it was going to be about 1/3 the amount).  There are also tons of stories on the attire forum.  Just don't do it.

  • My bridesmaids wore these and shortend them

They meet all your requirements and looked good on a variety of body types (IMHO)  Pics are in my bio so you can see them shorter

This - I'm assuming the issue is finding a dress that has enough coverage on the sholders rather than the length.  Scarves/shawls would be my suggestion.

Actually the issue is BOTH finding a dress that has wider straps AND just below the knee because my Maid of Honor is 5'9" all of the typicall cocktail dresses are not at a comfortable length for her.
  • Look on David's Bridal. I KNOW they have some.

Then finding a longer dress and having it altered to be shorter may be the best option. She can get it cut to the length she needs without having to spend more on a tall dress. I'd suggest looking at retail and department stores. Anytime something is associated with the wedding industry, it pretty much triples the price.

  • OP - I am 5'9" too.  All the BM dresses I have purchased have all fallen below my knee.  If your BM is really concerned about it, she should be able to have length added to any dress for an extra $20 or so.  For my wedding, my MOH was TTC at the time, so she bought 2 sizes up and added 4 inches of length, so that if she had a big baby bump (which she did!), the sizing of the dress would accomodate that.
  • A little late to this, but my girls got their dresses from www.cocomyles.com (I think that's the right URL, if not Google).

They can custom make the dress they want with skirt length, top style.  They were affordable and they came out beautifully.  I'm pretty sure they offer chiffon as well as satin.

They will send you the color swatches for free, you can reserve your fabric so everybody gets from the same lot.  One of the best parts was that if one of your girls has different size top vs. bottom, they will REALLY custom the dress and put a size 16 top on a size 12 bottom.

  • I know one good site: JenJenHouse.com. I recently bought one dress from them.

It arrived on time as promised and seriously is amazing! I paid 100.00 for this dress and it looks like I paid 500 for it! So pleased with this purchase!

Also, recently they have an activity on their FB. You could go and have a look.

You could also see the reviews on their website first and then decide.
