Can you have both satin and chiffon BM dresses?

Hello,

I wanted to let my bridesmaids choose their own dress and we couldn't find a designer that had a lot of cute styles in the color we were looking for so I decided to let them choose either satin or chiffon. The lady at the store said it would look fine in pictures to have both fabrics because it was from the same designer. Now I am watching My Fair Wedding, and they say that mixing fabrics is a huge no-no. Has anyone done this or seen this done? I would have all the girls in the same color dress, but some satin and some chiffon. What do you think?? I tried to be nice but I don't want it to look bad. Help!

I am.  My MOH's dress is chiffon with a satin sash at the waist, and my BM's dresses are satin with a chiffon halter and chiffon sash at the waist.

David Tutera is a jerk. The point of that show is to make brides think that budget weddings are bogus and that any idea you have is wrong if he doesn't like it. Notice how all the receptions look the same, just in different colors? He is there to convince you that you need to spend way more money than you have to host an acceptable wedding, which is absolute baloney or (bologna)!  I think that statement about different fabrics is an expression of David Tutera's opinion only.
 
If it looks good to you, then do it. IMO, they would be a lot more interesting to look at if they weren't wearing all the same.

I think there can be ways to make it work - like satin with shiffon sashes or chiffon with satin.

And if they're all the same color by the same designer then it can work too.

I think that it should be fine. One of my girls has a satin dress with a some chiffon fabric coming off of it and it looks great.

this is exactly what we did, and it was nice to add some variety since there were 6 bridesmaids.  It turned out they choose 3 satin and 3 chiffon dresses.  Pics:

i guess that was a little blurry.  I still haven't gotten used to the new format.  Don't know how to unblur it

I'm mixing fabrics. One dress is chiffon and it's champagne, the other is silk and it's brown. I love how the girls look next to each other. They are both strapless and wil be hemmed to be knee length, and they're both Bill Levkoff so they've got a similar style.

Yeah, I second the David Tutera hate.  I don't like to say that all traditional weddings are cookie-cutter, but the ones he plans sure are.

I couldn't pick satin or chiffon out of a lineup.  So long as there isn't a huge disparity in the colors, I think it will look fine.

As long as the colors are the same, you wont be able to see a huge different, especially in pictures. If you're happy with it, go for it. Don't worry about it, I'm sure it will be fine.

With regards to different colors, I think there's a narrow window where the colors don't work together, where they're noticeably different, but not different enough that it looks intentional.  If you stay out of that danger zone on either side (either very close or very different), it looks just fine.

I just went in with one of my BM's to buy her dress and the sales lady just explained that with the different fabrics there will be different light picked up by the sun in pictures that may make them look slightly different colors. I told her that there is no way that anyone looking at my wedding photos would even notice and I definitely didnt care if they were "slightly" different so as long as you arent going to be totally anal about that you should be fine. My girls are mixing styles, colors, and fabrics and I think it looks great.

Can you have both satin and chiffon BM dresses?  Of course you can.  What exactly do you think will happen if you do?

You'll still be just as married as you will with all chiffon dresses, or all satin dresses, or all blue dresses, or some blue and some red dresses.

 You'll still be just as married as you will with some girls with updos and some girls with their hair down. 

You'll still be just as married as you will with some girls in open toes shoes and some girls in pumps.

You'll still be just as married as you will with some girls having a pearl necklace, and others having a gemstone necklace.

You'll still be just as married as you will with some girls having a tatttoo and some that don't.

The point of my diatribe is that you're overthinking this.  Really:  people in wedding shops, on wedding tv shows, in wedding magazines, and on wedding websites is to convince you that unless you do EXACTLY what they say, and follow their arbitrary rules, your weddings won't be special, unique, interesting, or memorable.

Do what you want with the dresses.  Your guests won't care, and you'll have very happy BMs.

Yes, the satin and chiffon textures will add a little interest to the bridesmaids dresses. If you like the way they look then go with it. Don't invite David Tutera to your wedding and everything will be fine.

That was actually my original plan- except in addition I was letting them buy off the rack.  In the end, after seeing the two fabrics in person, I nixed this idea (prior to anyone buying dresses).  I can see how it could work a lot better if they were buying from the same designer. 
What I could also suggest is maybe checking out a bunch of dresses (in both fabrics) next to each other, and in person, and a variety of prices.  Then let your ladies select from that group.
