How did your FI/DH propose?

Boards are slow and I'm curious.

Re: How did your FI/DH propose?

  • He proposed via a PowerPoint Presentation. Cleverly disguised as "Will you look over this presentation I'm doing for work and tell me if you see any typos or obvious errors?" I got to about slide 9 and he had a photo of us from our first trip to NYC together and he'd started to write a message to me that continued for a slide or two and ended with the one that said 'WIll you marry me?" At which point he got down on one knee, asked formally, and put the ring on my finger. Cool

  • My FI and I go to Edisto Beach in SC every year as a vacation in Oct. I got off work and we drove down to the beach. We got there around 10pm and he asked if I wanted to go for a night stroll on the beach. I should have had a clue when he changed into nice clothes to walk on the beach at 10pm.

We got out there and there was a full moon, tons of stars, and no clouds. We walked for a while until we saw a shooting star. Since they are good luck he said there was no better time and proposed. He said some really sweet stuff before the "Will you marry me" but everything just kinda went into one big blur. The ring was 2 sizes to big because he didn't know that sizing took awhile. We then got to spend the rest of our vacation engaged. :)

  • My fiance and I met and dated in college.  Many years after graduation (okay, 7 years) during one of our many visits back, he proposed on a patio that overlooked our entire campus.  It was so pretty :)

My DH put the ring on a rose and stuck the rose in a bouquet.  He gave me the roses, I made a fuss over them, cut of the stems, put them in water, arranged them, then put the vase on a table and walked away.

I came back and he was holding the rose and said "You missed the special one."  "Oh why is it special?" "Look it over."  I looked and looked and finally saw the ring (this isn't a comment on its size, I'm just thick).  I got really excited and he got down on one knee.  But the first words he said weren't "will you marry me?" but rather "What do I have to do, beat you with this before you notice?"  Then he asked me :)

  • Our first date was under the guise of just hanging out as friends. We were drinking coffee and he said, "So, you think you and me together is a good idea?"

Proposal day, we were sitting on a bench by the Hudson River and chatting, and he said, "So, you think you and me forever is a good idea?"

  • Thanks, Brooke. I'd have to agree. Wink

Best part is I could print out the PPT slides and keep that part of the proposal to remember what he'd said there. What he said to me out loud, I barely remember. lol.

  • My fiance sent me on a scavenger hunt. I got home from work and he had taped a note to the front door with a riddle of the next location to go. I'm a sucker for riddles and I knew this had to be something special.

I got sent all around town to places that were special to us. Where we first lived, places we liked to go, eventually it led back to my desk at work where he had left flowers telling me to go back to where i began and where our life together for the rest of our lives was going to begin.

He met me on the sidewalk in front of our apartment on one knee. *sigh* it was awesome. That's a story I love telling.

  • My FI whisked me away on a romantic getaway.  Beforehand, he swore up and down that he wasn't going to propose on the trip, although everyone else was convinced that he would.  But I believed him.  We'd talked about the timeline and I was ure it was still several months away.  Plus he said that he wanted to have two things to look forward to and it was a question of money, etc.  He had a lot of very good, very convincing reasons!

On our second night, we went out to dinner and he surprised me with dinner on the beach and our song playing under our table.  After dinner, he asked me to dance and then he told me all the reasons he loved me and asked me to marry him.

    He got me. :)

I love reading the stories!  Brooke, he totally would have had to beat me with it.  I'm pretty thick, too. :-)

We'd been talking about it for months, and my FI told me he would propose by the end of January (not a good thing to tell a girl who obsesses over deadlines...).  I let it go, until 11:54 pm on January 31st.  I looked at him and said something along the lines of, "Sooo?  Not by the end of January?"  Ugh, I suck.  But he burst out with how much he loved me and wanted to marry me, but hadn't been able to get the ring yet.  Which was totally fine by me--so he asked "officially" and I said "yes" and got all teary and all that good stuff.

The next day, I called my mom to ask if she wanted to go to lunch with us at Arby's, and couldn't get ahold of her.  When she called me back after we had eaten, and I told her that FI had asked me to marry him, her first response was, "At ARBY's??"  Ha.
  • My DH and I had been together over a year and I was starting to get antsy but I didn't want to say anything to him b/c I didn't want to feel like I made him propose.  One night he and I were supposed to go to dinner with some friends and we got to the restaurant first.  I am a sign language interpreter and he asked me about working with some people on their signing skills and then he said he knew some sign language. I then told him that holding your middle finger in the air isn't really sign lanuguage.  He said no, I really know some, and then proceeded to sign " Ellen will you marry me?"  in the second it took me to process that, he was down on one knee with my gorgeous ring.  I said Yes and then I found out that my family, his mom, and some friends were coming to celebrate our engagement.  It was a perfect night.
We were engaged on 3/21/09 and married on 12/30/09:)

  • We live 1000 miles away, we always have.

On valentines day this year he sent me a cute little package but I couldnt open it til we both were on msn on our webcams.

Once we did that he told me to open it. He gave me 2 t shirts. A black one and a orange one from his college. I thanked him and he said to look inside the orange one. When I did her had taped notebook paper in the shirt. I got it and he told me to open it. Inside was a red baggie. I asked hm if it was a necklace. he said no. bracelet? no. I opened it and saw a beautiful CZ ring. It was perfect. I started to tear up but it didnt really hit me til 10 minutes after.

So far its like a semi-engagement since he wants to offically meet and ask my dad. After that, we get to annouce it.
  • This is a two part story:

    Part 1
I worked a LONG Friday at work.  I called DH to say that I wasn't going to be out untili well after 5 due to issues that we were having on the job but I'd get there soon.  It was after 6 when I left and then I stopped by the wine store to pick up a couple bottles of prosecco and some flutes for DH.  I thought he'd like to add to his collection (we weren't living together) and that they could be fun with dinner.

When I walked into the condo, he was eating a Klondike bar for dinner.  I was upset that he didn't wait for me, tired from a long day at work and there was no filter.  I told him that I didn't like that he didn't make an effort to impress me anymore and I was grumpy that after a long day, I was on my own for the meal.  We made up and I was over it.

    Part2:
It's a week or two later and I leave work, get my oil changed on my car and then get to DH's (now our) condo.  I walked in and he was putting food together like a crazy man!  I said, "What's all this?" and he said, "I know you said that I don't make an effort to impress you so I thought we'd go out for a picnic dinner at Harkness.  He'd made shrimp cocktail on cucmber slices, steak and Gorgonzola, and a bottle of wine was chilling.

I was impressed already!  He'd even gone to get a haircut before he got home.  I was suspcious but didn't say anything.  We left for the park, arrived with our basket and blanket and sat down.  We talked about the day, work, the crazy lady that he has in his department and I thought that things just seemed nice and normal.

All the food was basically gone and then DH said, "Well, this isn't it.  There's more."

And with that, I looked for more food.

But instead he began to talk about marriage and proposing.  And he got down on one ring, as the sun was setting over LI sound and asked me to marry him.  I cried, hugged him, and then when it felt like minutes had gone by and he didn't put the ring on my finger, I grabbed the ring out of the box and put it on.  Yeah, I won't live that one down either.

I also found out that he'd talked to my parents mere MINUTES before I got to his place so they were in the loop on what he was going to do.

And here is a picture of the park where he popped the question:
