Wedding Party

REALLY really need advice - fiance has 3 sisters

So like many other posts on here I have a major dilemma with selecting my bridal party. As of right now my fiance and I each have 3 people on our respective sides standing up for us. My problem, however, that I will honestly admit is causing me major stress and anxiety, is whether to ask his 3 older sisters to be bridesmaids or not.

In my gut I feel like I should ask them since i think its a nice gesture of bringing our families together but my head just doesn't agree. I have a hard time forgetting that all 3 were not very nice or welcoming to me when I first started dating my fiance and up until getting engaged have never really made much of an effort to get to know me. Since getting engaged I've gotten closer with 2 out of the 3 but i still wonder if it's just because of the circumstances. I've discussed what to do with my fiance and he said it doesn't matter to him whether or not they're bridesmaids but we both agree it should be all or none. I know it would make his parents really happy to have their daughters included but I feel like I should be surrounded by people who I know will make my day amazing and I'm not sure I'll feel that way with his sisters..especially the one I don't get along with. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings as well so I'm just so confused. I should also mention if we did ask the sisters it would be without additional groomsmen so that would make the numbers uneven and I'm not sure how I feel about that.

I don't know...I guess I'm just looking for some thoughts/comments/suggestions that can help me make a decision. Does anyone have a sister of the groom they wish they did or didn't include? I don't want to look back and say I wish I did something differently. I know I can have them do readings etc but it's not the same.

Basically I need to know what would YOU do? Help,

  • You should ask the people you are closest too.  My H has 4 sisters but I only asked one - the sister I was/am closest to - to be a bridesmaid in the wedding.

If you want to include your fiance's sisters in the wedding in another way you could ask them each to do a short reading or to share a musical talent or maybe even to serve as ushers.  (We had two sisters do readings at the ceremony and one volunteered contribute in an artistic way.)  You could also honor them with corsages or small bouquets.

I don't think you have to ask them, and I wouldn't give them a "job" like program person or guest book minder.  Being a guest is an honor itself so I wouldn't worry too much if you don't ask them.

  • I would not ask them. They, as family, will be seated up front, which is an honor, as is simply being a guest.

BTW, you and your FI can have uneven sides.

  • Just because they are his sisters does not mean that you are required to have them in the wedding.  I didn't have my H's sister in my wedding...in fact it didn't even cross my mind to ask her.

If your FI want them to be included then he can certainly ask them to stand on his side.  But again, just because they are family does not mean that they need to be included.

  • Your wedding party should be your nearest and dearest.  If you are not close to his sisters, there is no reason to ask them to be bridesmaids.

If your fiance would like them to stand up on his side, he can certainly ask them to do that.

  • Do not feel obligated to ask them! Have your best friends and people closest to you. People should understand that.
