Asking Friend to Sing During Ceremony

We've asked a friend of ours to sing at our wedding. She's sung at my sister's wedding, and I love her and her voice! I've read Anita Diamant's book, but I didn't really see a section about singing. I've asked the rabbi (we've had one meeting w/him, so far), and he's said, "we'll have to figure that out, but we have time" since our wedding is in March 2010. Is anyone else having family/friend sing a song? When during the ceremony can one have a song? We're thinking of "Song of Ruth" which has beautiful lyrics: "Whither thou goest, there also will I go; and where thou lodgest, there also will I lodge; thy land be my land, and thy home be my home; oh bid me not, oh bid me not to leave thee."

To me, singing isn't any different than having musicians and songs are usually done for the processional (before and after).  I'd have your friend sing your entrance, or if you are circling, that would be a lovely time; otherwise she can sing when the ceremony is over. I can't see your rabbi not being cool with this, but he's right - you have time to work that out, there are other logistics to work out now.  Good luck.

My husband sang to me under the chuppah, I know it's different, but not really -- If I recall --- seems like yesterday and decades ago all at the same time ---after the rabbi spoke about us as a couple he lead into my husband's song...hope it helps.

There are several places to add a singer or musician... 1. At the badeken if you're having one 2. Processional and circling (my husband sang me down the aisle) 3. While signing the ketubah 4. After reading the ketubah, before 7 blessings 5. after 7 blessings, before breaking the glass 6. at the reception before birkat hamazon You do have lots of time to figure this out, but if you can get an idea of who and what you're including in the ceremony, you can try to figure out where it makes sense in the flow of the service (if that makes any sense)
