How to hang your dress

My mom and I brought home my dress on Sunday after the final fitting.  The woman at the shop explained how to hang it so that train can "breathe" by basically hanging it backwards so the front faced the door.  However, there was a bust form in the dress which prevented it from hanging so my mom and I pulled it out.  Basically the train is breathing but I'm worried the front of the dress is being suffocated (haha...) - My wedding is not until the 30th so I'm thinking I may need to steam it before the big day.

Are we hanging it incorrectly or are others getting the dress steamed again closer to the wedding date?

Re: How to hang your dress

  • You'd probably want to steam it anyway as it gets closer. I'm using our little steamer the day of the get any wrinkles out last minute.

If you have to space for it, screw a hook into your ceiling and hang the dress from that. It won't be squished from anything that way. That's what we're doing, and I know many people who have done that and been happy with it.

Be careful with steaming too much though - certain fabrics lose their sheen if steamed too much.
  • How poofy is the front of your dress? Is it realy getting squished?

I just picked my dress up yesterday from being steamed, she told me to lay it out so the train doesn't get creased so I have it laid out on the bed in our guest room.
  • I am picking mine up this weekend and I am getting it pressed about a week before the wedding.

Mine is still being altered, but I plan on hanging it on the door frame of my closet. The bridal salon where I purchased my dress will steam it for free the week of the wedding, but I will still have a small steamer on site.
