Wedding Dress shopping

Hi ladies! I'm going to look at dresses tomorrow and have a few questions. How many appointments is too many? I have four places set up but I'm a little worried that it might be too many. Also, is there anything that I need to bring with me for trying on the dresses?

Re: Wedding Dress shopping

  • Hi Lindsey!
Four places? Seems a bit overwhelming, but can it be done....yes. I set up two appointments in one day and I was drained; however, it all depends on the bride. I don't want to put a damper in  your mood....but maybe you could start off with one or two apts in one day. Depending on where you go, I am sure they will have plenty of gowns you are sure to love. = ) Hope I was helpful. My mom just payed for my dress yesterday. I'm super excited! Oh yea, you asked if you needed to bring anything. Well....when I tried on dresses at David's Bridal and Alfred Angelo they supplied me with a petticoat and a corset....however, when I went to a smaller boutique they asked that I wear my own appropriate under garment. So, the bigger bridal salons will probably have everything you need, but with the smaller places you may want to wear a starless bra just incase they don't provide you with one. = ) Good luck!!
  • definitely good underwear and bra.  other than that, a positive attitude and a smile!  have fun and good luck!  let us know how it goes!

  • Thank you for the advice! I decided to cancel one of the shops. The last thing I want is to be rushed and overwhelmed. I'm looking forward to a fun day and hopefully I'll find my dress! I'll definitely let you all know how it goes!
  • I agree that 4 in one day is alot. I only went to one each day I went. I have pretty large boobs (sorry for the info) but I didn't need a bra at all. Wedding dress are pretty supportive. That is unless you plan on getting a loosy goosy dress that is chiffonish.

But def wear full underwear. I hope your not modest. If you are, After going to 3 shops in one day you won't be anymore!

  • When I went, I didn't even make appointments, We also went on a day of the week where most people are working at that time and ran into no problems. We wound  up in three places, big and small shops, and they had everything I needed there. Found my dress at the last place we went to that first day and I absolutely love it.

If you've been looking at dresses online and have a few favorites, you may want to print them off so your consultant has an idea of your taste. Having said this, I forgot to do this when I went and it was a perfectly wonderful experience anyway. I wound up with something completely different than I ever would have thought so be willing to try on things you may not be sure about. You could be pleasantly suprised. :)

    Have fun!
  • Going with an open mind! :)  If your going with friends or family, Even if you think that you are going to hate a dress, I would suggest you try it on.  It sounds silly, but it will keep their attention, if you make it seem like you want/need their input.  There were a couple dresses my a mom picked out and I was like "I will look ridiculous in that", but tried it on to keep her happy ;)  and surprisingly, there was 1 or 2 that looked really nice, even though I thought it looked terrible on the hanger!
I agree with the full underwear too!!
I hope that you have fun! :D  Good Luck!

  • Wear full underwear, go in with an open mind and trust your consultant. I went in thinking I knew exactly what I wanted but I ended up falling in love with something totally different.

I would also recommend taking a camera, have who ever is there with you take pics from all angles.

HAVE FUN, let us know how it goes

  • I agree with what PPs said.  Definitely wear full underwear, I made the mistake of wearing a thong on my first appointment and it was really awkward.  Also, if the places you are going have websites, I recommend going to them and checking out what the designers they sell have to offer.  I usually wrote down the style numbers of the dresses I liked, so this way if they had them, I could try them on, but if they didn't, the consultant got an idea of what type of dress I liked when she looked them up, which helps her recommend other dreses.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

  • Everything PPs have been saying.  Also, ask your consultant before taking pictures.  Many places won't let you.  David's Bridal allowed us, but only because the manager wasn't upstairs at the time.  The smaller boutiques I went to didn't allow pictures.

Absolutely trust your consultant and have a very open/comfortable relationship with them.  The more they get to know you, the easier it is to figure out your style and pull dresses that you may love and never thought about.  I had a great consultant at one boutique who really took the time to understand how I wanted to look and feel on my wedding day and she pulled dresses I would have never tried on by myself and they were gorgeous and exactly what I was looking for without knowing it.

I went to 4 different places for dresses, not all on the same day, and I was amazed at how unique each experience was.  If you go to multiple places in a day, try to eliminate quickly so you don't get confused with to many dresses.  If I tried one on that I liked 10x better then the last one, then I wouldn't even go back to the other once since I found one so much better.  I hope that makes sense Smile
