  • Thanks DrPB!  That does sound yummy but I also love donuts and that seems similar.
  • Well, as the token Polish girl....

No, I won't be having one. Where we live no there isn't good Polish food so I don't bother even trying it. I'm spoiled from growing up in Jersey where you can find amazing traditional foods. Maybe I'll get a jelly donut and pretend?

  • Probably wouldn't ever eat one. The only doughnuts I like are the cinnamon swirly kind without filling.
  • MMRobers, this may only be a Michigan thing. I plan on eating one even though I shouldn't. Mmmm! Girls, they're like Jelly Doughnuts (sometimes custard) but even fatter, but oh so tasty!
  • It's a Polish food that you'll likely only find if there is a polish population in your town (for example, buffalo, where I'm from, has a large polish population and I'd have no trouble finding one there. I am polish, though, and I've never had paczki). Maybe go to a donut shop and get a donut and pretend its paczki?

  • I think FI will, but I am not a huge fan of them.King's Cake, however. Yes- I can do that! DEE LISH!

Yeah looks like this isn't a national thing like I assumed it was. Pretty sure everyone in MI knows what one is. FI and I were just talking about them..we haven't the last couple of years but I think we will tomorrow :) We did see them at Kroger though (Cincinnati area) so I think they do it in Ohio at least too.

  • Local bakeries in Cincinnati make them too. You can also buy them at local grocery stores. I really like them but have not had one yet this year (trying to watch what I eat). However, here at work we always have a King's Cake....yummy!

  • They're a polish thing, and some cities don't have a large Polish population. We have tons of Polish bakeries in Buffalo that sell them. We always get placek for Easter.

Typical Fat Tuesday mindset..since you are supposed to fast on Ash Wednesday the idea is to shove as many calories in one delicious ball of fat as you can. Love 'em!

I'm guessing so.  I know when I lived in AZ they had them too so maybe it just migrated there when a lot of people from MI moved there.  Sorry, I thought it was national.

  • Technically it is a Polish thing and it's also related to lent. Typically people are supposed to fast for Lent and this is kind of like your last treat before you fast for the next 40 days. I'm not Catholic, so I don't know all the rules.
