Posted by kipnus
The only reason I specified what "type" of Christian I am is because there are differences.  For example, in my religion misters are allowed to marry (other Christians are not...), we don't do communion weekly (others do), we don't believe the minister/priest is the way you connect to Jesus/God that we can do that directly through prayer (others do...).  To me those are some pretty big differences.  Yes, we all believe Jesus is the savior and the Song of God but there are some pretty different beliefs within that.  That's just my opinion.

• So I have a question and I'm really not meaning to offend anyone.

If you're an atheist, why do you celebrate Christmas? It just seems weird to me to be observing a religous holiday that celebrates Jesus' birth when you don't believe in him or God.

I guess I look at Christmas as more commercialized. Like Christmas decor everywhere, Christmas music/movies, giving presents to friends and family. I've also been reading info on how Jesus may not have really been born on Christmas. Interesting reads

<div>Totally not offended. And we don't really "celebrate" Christmas.  We do visit our families on Christmas Eve/Christmas Day since everyone gathers at that time. In my case this means I stay home and make dinner while everyone goes to Mass.. My FI usually does go to Mass with his mother to make her happy (which I don't understand how merely sitting there not participating/believing makes her any happier than not going at all but whatevs). We do have a "winter solstice" tree in our apartment, with non-religious decorations. Technically the tree tradition came from Celtic pagan practices but the real reason why? I like trees. And they make the apartment smell nice. FI and I exchange gifts but our anniversary is around New Years so we consider them anniversary gifts. </div>

• IF you feel like sharing, what religion are you?
I'm Catholic.

Is your Fi the same religion?

He was baptized Episcopalian, but his family didn't practice any kind of religion growing up.

How do you "practice" your faith?  (Attending a place of worship, reading, etc.)

I go to Mass semi-regularly and I pray everyday.

How do you see your religion playing a role in your future with Fi/family?
FI is totally fine with us raising our children in the Catholic church and has even said he will come to Mass with us so that it is something we do as a family.

IF you feel like sharing, what religion are you?
Agnostic.. I was under the impression that Atheist did not believe in god at all whereas Agnostic felt that there were so many things out there you did not know either way.

Agnostic~a person who holds that the existence of the ultimate cause, as God, and the essential nature of things are unknown and unknowable, or that human knowledge is limited to experience (dictionary.com)

My parents grew up with the influence of different religions primarily LDS/Mormon. I was never baptised, my parents where but had their names removed from the books. My parents felt we should chose what we wanted... I went to several different churches growing up.. because I was curious about different beliefs. I think that is why I don't believe in one religion. I am not a big fan of organized religion.. only because of my own experiences. I felt like I was forced to believe one thing or another and wasn't allowed to have different beliefs outside of the churches views.

Is your Fi the same religion?

FI does not believe there is a god. (Fi's parents the same... baptised LDS.. have not had their names removed)

How do you "practice" your faith?  (Attending a place of worship, reading, etc.)
As I stated I do not like organized religion but am a spiritual person.

How do you see your religion playing a role in your future with Fi/family?
I don't see much of an effect. We are not sure if we are going to have kids or not. If we did.. I would let them experience and chose for themselves.

In regards to Christmas; I do believe Christ was a real person regardless of my religious preferences. Unfortunately, Christmas has become quite secular and commercialized. I have Jewish friends who celebrate Christmas. We celebrate because I do believe Christ was a real person and that he felt strongly about giving to others in need and spending time with the family. I feel like that is a legit reason to celebrate the holiday regardless of my beliefs.

<div>Halloween traditions and "Christmas trees" were originally pagan, but people other than pagans celebrate them still.  I grew up with holiday traditions (grew up protestant) and I don't plan on giving them up (making food, decorating the house, and giving gifts) just because I don't believe in Christianity.  I don't deny that Jesus was born, which is what Christmas is about, really. I go to Christmas mass with my mother because she wants me too, and I'm not going to fight her on it. </div>

• Science and Religion really don't need to be at odds with each other. There's a brilliant professor (retired now) from our local college who has attended my church as long as I can remember. He always has the best children's messages and he always uses sciene to prove his point.

Katelyn, you're right about it not necessarily being his birthday. Christmas did start as a Pagan holiday as Meg said but it's been a Christian holiday for a very long time. No one can deny that it's become super commercialized though. It doesn't surprise me that atheists celebrate the gift-giving side of Christmas but what I don't understand is going to Christmas Eve mass as an atheist unless you're still open to Christianity. Please note that I'm not trying to sound like a jerk at all, it's just something I don't understand. If someone can explain it, feel free.

<div>I actually love it.  It's run by the kids [last year I got roped into doing a reading, as did my old babysitter who has one of her own (and one on the way!)] and a lot of the kids I taught in Sunday School, when I went and was a practicing Christian. • IF you feel like sharing, what religion are you? I was raised roman catholic but consider myself Christian But not uber religious Is your Fi the same religion? Yes How do you "practice" your faith?  (Attending a place of worship, reading, etc.) Well we don't go to church except for memorial masses or funerals. We both agree that you don't need to go to church to talk to or worship god. Organized religion kinda freaks me out it always had all of the praying out loud in unison reminds me of a cult but this I's just my opinion and I hope that doesn't offend anyone. We celebrate Christmas and Easter but not every single holiday on the calendar. We used to do the whole lent thing but we haven't done it the past year or so. We are getting married in the catholic church for our families sake. We both have made all of our sacraments, I was even an alter server as a kid. We don't agree with a lot of the catholic beliefs against gay marriage, abortion, anti yoga/meditation, no sex or living together before marriage, and the use of birth control. We both believe that there is someone or something out there greater then ourselves. How do you see your religion playing a role in your future with Fi/family? I think fi and I will baptize our children again to make our families happy because if we don't there will be no peace. Beyond that we haven't decided how far we will go with this.

• I have no idea why FI goes to mass with his mother. His father is an atheist (and always has been) so it's not a foreign concept to his mother. His cousin is actually getting ordained as a priest three weeks before our wedding so our strictly civil ceremony has not gone so well with the FILs.

IF you feel like sharing, what religion are you?  Seventh Day Adventist - SDA ( Christians)

Is your Fi the same religion?  Yes we actually grew up in the same Church and attended  the same SDA college.

How do you "practice" your faith?  (Attending a place of worship, reading, etc.)  We both have a ministry in the Church. I usher and he does the Audio Visual room.  I am also apart of the church school improvement board ( church school) . He also, teaches a teenage bible class, where I go to co-teach or give him moral support.

How do you see your religion playing a role in your future with Fi/family?  This was one of the questions from our pastors in Pre-Martial Counseling. We continue to keep God first in our relationship. We pray and study the bible together as well as individually. When we first started dating he asked me how would he earn my submission. My answer was to follow God and make me number one. He did both, and now he is the head of my household because, I know that he will continue to seek God for directions when it comes to our family. Also, I know at times I will have to take one for the team however, I know that my well being and happiness is always at the front of his mind.

IF you feel like sharing, what religion are you?
I'm Christian. I grew up in a Church of God (Anderson, Indiana based, not the Cleveland, Tennessee Church of God), but currently attend a Methodist church.

Is your Fi the same religion?
FI is Catholic, but goes to church with me sometimes.

How do you "practice" your faith? (Attending a place of worship, reading, etc.)
I "practice" my faith through going to church, prayer, reading my Bible, and trying to show my faith through my actions.

How do you see your religion playing a role in your future with Fi/family?
FI wants to find a church that we both feel comfortable attending (I'm completely fine with this), so we're in the process of researching churches. Faith will play a central role in our family.
In Response to Re: Religions :  And, while I'm being curious, MM can you please tell me about Taoism?
Posted by diamondx423
Sure!
<div id="yui_3_3_0_1_1324391139895327" class="content">The founder of Taoism is Lao-Tse (604-531 BCE). He was searching for a way that would avoid the constant feudal warfare and other conflicts that disrupted society during his lifetime. The result was his book: Tao-te-Ching (a.k.a. Daodejing).
Taoism started as a combination of psychology and philosophy but evolved into a religious faith in 440 CE when it was adopted as a state religion. At that time Lao-Tse became popularly venerated as a deity.
With the end of the Ch'ing Dynasty in 1911, state support for Taoism ended. Much of the Taoist heritage was destroyed during the next period of warlordism.
After the Communist victory in 1949, religious freedom was severely restricted. The new government put monks to manual labor, confiscated temples, and plundered treasures. Several million monks were reduced to fewer than 50,000 by 1960.
During the cultural revolution in China from 1966 to 1976, much of the remaining Taoist heritage was destroyed. Some religious tolerance has been restored under Deng Xiao-ping from 1982 to the present time.
Taoism currently has about 20 million followers, and is primarily centered in Taiwan. About 30,000 Taoists live in North America. Taoism has had a significant impact on North American culture in areas of "acupuncture, herbalism, holistic medicine, meditation and martial arts..."</div>

• IF you feel like sharing, what religion are you?
I was raised Catholic, but am currently agnostic/atheist (not sure which). I believe that there may be a greater being, but there may not be, and nobody really knows. I guess I don't understand the concept of "faith".

Is your Fi the same religion?

Yes. He was also raised to believe in God, and still somewhat does.

How do you "practice" your faith?  (Attending a place of worship, reading, etc.)

I don't.

How do you see your religion playing a role in your future with Fi/family?
I want my kids to understand the difference between different religions, but I am not raising them in a particular way. My daughter talks about God sometimes, and even though I don't believe I completely support her if she does. I did not baptize either of my kids, nor will I with any future kids.

We celebrate Christmas because I was raised Catholic.  I think even if I wasn't , we would probably still celebrate since Christmas has become more commericalized. I can't imagine not celebrating, then having the kids go back to school and find out all of the things their friends got, while they got nothing. To me it is more about spending time with family and friends, and an excuse to buy my kids all of the things they ask for throughout the year :)
