What kind of pen for addressing invites?

I want to get pearly envelopes. What kind of pen should I use? I was thinking a thin sharpie. I need something that won't smudge. I don't want a caligraphy pen, I would mess it up. haha

Re: What kind of pen for addressing invites?

  • We don't have pearly envelopes (flat/matte) but FI is planning on using a thin tip Sharpie as well. His handwriting is much better than mine so he's doing all the addressing of envelopes and place cards!
  • I purchased 3 thin Sharpie pens literally yesterday.  The package says they won't bleed or smudge, and I think they'll look nice!

I love Sharpie pens, but they WILL bleed through paper if you press hard when you write, or sometimes rest the tip on the paper.  The rate of bleed through is different for every paper, but when they claim it doesn't bleed they mean if you write very lightly and don't ever rest your pen tip ;)

If you have extra envelopes, I'd recommend testing it out for a bit to make sure your writing style isn't bleeding through, and to practice if it does,

  • I made clear lables on the computer. It wasn't too expensive, they look nice and I was able to use the same ones for shower invites and thank yous as well.

  • I'm also going to use the sharpie pens likely.

Thanks for the heads up!  Fortunately I have a ton of extra envelopes for practice.

  • One with ink.

    Sorry I couldn't resist :)
  • If you're worried about bleeding put a piece of thick paper in the envelope

  • I'm really picky about pens so i bought a few to try.
For our save the dates, I used a black Faber Castell Pitt Artist Pen in Super Fine.
Our invite envelopes are a dark color, so I'm using either silver Sharpie Paint pen in extra fine or Faber Castell Pitt Silver Metallic Artist Pen (1.5mm).  None of these smeared on glossy envelopes.  But you have to be a little careful.

  • I was at Hobby Lobby yesterday and they have "calligraphy pens" that are more like sharpies, but have a flat tip to make the writing look more similar to calligraphy. I think they're called elegant ink pens or something like that. I would get those if I were you. Sharpies are either really fat or too thin.
  • Kelsey- We don't have hobby lobby :( I have Michaels and Joanns. I looked at Michaels, but didn't see any.

  • Fawn, here's link to hem a Hobby Lobby. You can purchase them online, but I bet other stores carry them or something similar. http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/elegant-writer-121640/?F_All=Y

  • I will try the clear labels and printing addresses on the computer!
  • I printed my addresses on white Avery labels. I worked really well
  • Oh how I wish I had neat handwriting.  We are just printing out labels for the envelopes because I have such terrible handwriting

  • I sent my envelopes through my printer! I downloaded a fancy font that I liked and used a Word document to type the addresses. Word can print addresses on envelopes, you just have to measure the size of them.

My envelopes were glossy and it did smudge a little. I had to be extra careful and wait till they fully dried before I could put the cards inside and seal it.

Me too! If you have a printer I would highly recommend making labels. Once all of the information is entered in you can use them for invites, rsvp, and thank you cards.
