NWR Monogram

I know we've been down this road like a hundred times before, but I am just curious. What is proper etiquette in regards to how/when you use a 3-letter monogram or the 1-letter (last name monogram) after you are married?

Obviously after we get married we will use our monograms for different things, but I am curious to know if it is ever proper etiquette to use a 3-letter monogram with you and your husbands first name initals and your last name initial or do you only use the 3-letter monogram for personal items (meaning something only you would use like a jewelry box) after you're married? For example, the 3-letter monogram pillowcases... how would you do those after you're married?

Does any of this make sense to you? (I know I have horrible grammar and I am terrible at articulating things)

Re: NWR Monogram

  • For something like pillowcases, or towels you would use both of your first initials (your's and his) and your last initial. If you were to put a monogram on something like a bag for you, or like you said a jewelry box, you would use YOUR monogram--your initials. So, in other words, if it's something for the home, or if it's something both you and H will use, its your joined monogram. If its something personal, that only you will use, it's your own monogram.

  • Thanks Sheila! Didn't even think about this!

  • I'm ignoring etiquette on this one and have items before our wedding that have monograms with both initials and his last name initial. I even have a sign in our apartment I got him for our anniversary that has our new last name, always and forever, and our date

    I agree with this.

  • Actually, proper etiquette states that all household items have the wife's monogram and all the bar things and other "manly" items have the husbands. So towels, sheets and other things like that have your monogram. Cocktail shakers, decanters and things of that nature have your husbands. For the 1-letter monogram, that goes on things that are either more general use or that don't have enough room for a 3-letter monogram. We're going to have our last name initial put on our sterling flatware. Technically a monogram that has two peoples names isn't a true monogram because it doesn't show "one name." I know it's become more accepted to have a couple's monogram and I'm sure a lot of people won't agree with me on this, but I was just stating what was proper and traditional etiquette.
  • Thanks for the insight!
