Re: NWR: Kitchen Remodel (PIP heavy)

  • NICEEEE.....We are moving into a house at the end of the month and will have a few projects of our own..

That turned out great!!  If you can....lets see a close up of the backsplash.  I've never seen something like that.

    Congrats on a great job!

  • Sure thing.. the grouting still needs to be cleaned up a little, so try to ignore that. :)

  • That's really impressive. I love what a can of white paint does to ugly, outdated cabinets.
  • Great Work! I LOVE glass tile! =) and I love that you put it above the cabinets too soooo unique!
  • Great job!!!

  • Ash, I'm not going to lie.. it was time consuming.  Not hard, but VERY time consuming.  Here was the process:

    Day 1:

    1) Take all the cabinet doors off the wall.  Remove all hinges and handles, lay out all the doors on a drop sheet in a big area (I used a spare bedroom so I could close the door and keep cats out).  LABEL THEM (I used tape and put it above the cabinets on the drop sheeted area).

    2) Sand everything (both sides, the edges, and the frame on the wall) using a fine grit sandpaper until the surface is not shiny AT ALL.  If you leave it shiny, the paint won't adhere.

    3) Prime the cabinets on the front and all around every edge (it would be helpful to have things to keep them off the ground.. like ice cream buckets or some sort of pedestal), and the wood on the frames (using a thin coat.. if you do thick layers, it gets all gunky by the end).

    4) Once the first coat is mainly dry, prime the cabinets on the front and the wood on the frames AGAIN (yes, twice.. it looks WAY better if you take the time to make sure you get a good base coat).  Again, THIN layers.

    Day 2:
    5)  Wait until it is completely dry, then turn them over.. prime and paint on the insides and all around the eges, using as many coats as necessary.. thin coats.

    6)  Wait SEVERAL hours...Flip them back over PAINT the fronts and the frames. Remember not to let the layers get too thick.  My cabinets took 2 more thin coats to look right.  If I'm honest, I think one more coat may have improved them further, but I was burnt out.

    Day 3:
    7) Wait until they are COMPLETELY dry, then add all the handles and hinges back together and put them back on the wall, using your notes for where they go.  I bought all new hinges for mine so they would look nicer.

It was a lot of work, but I think they came out really nice ultimately!
  • Looks great! Congratulations on the completion!

Me too!  I loved taking apart the entire kitchen when we got a house and redoing it how I wanted.  It's so much fun.

  • That looks amazing. Good Job!!!
  • Wow! That's so great that you could do all that in such a short time!
  • that looks awesome & for cheap. Amazing what good deals you can find when you save on labor & do it yourself, no one would have guessed that tired kitchen in the first pic is the same. My bar stools are very similar to yours, i don't have a table anymore, just a breakfast bar.
