Engagement Dinner/party??

HI June Brides!!
What is everyone's thoughts or opinions on an engagement party or dinner? I would like to do something to get the families together and also to announce our wedding party.. but we don't know what to do... Any thoughts??? Anybody else having a June wedding and having a or have had an engagement party/dinner yet??

I haven't really thought about one. My family and friends live at least 2 hours from his family and friends so I figure if one of the two want to get both families, or just their own, together then I'm game.

My friend was proposed to at a big birthday dinner for her but they also invited friends over a few weeks later as an "engagement party."

I had mine already that's were my little icon picture came from. We only invited aunts and uncles that lived in the area.. most of our family is from out of state/country.

Our engagement party had a theme too! Mickey and Minnie!!
Reason: He proposed at Disney World.

I think we're going to do a backyard bbq in summer 2011...I don't want to put anyone out (including myself!) by having it at a reception hall or restaurant and we really will need somewhere big to have it (both my mom and his mom have HUGE backyards). The only issue is that my mom really wants to have it but she doesn't "believe" in engagement parties. So she said that she'd host it but we "wouldn't call it an engagement party there wouldn't be gifts." Hmm...I don't mean to be greedy, but engagement parties are pretty standard; I've been to my fair share and given my fair share of gifts! I don't want to take this day away from my mom but if she doesn't change her tune....I dunno.

I don't think we will be having an enagement party. My family is about 3 hours away and I just don't see it happening. Although when my parents come up to visit after the holidays, we plan on going out with both sets of parents to celebrate the engagment so I guess that would be as close to an engagement party for us.

After we got home from our vacation in May that FI proposed to me during, my parents and brother took us out to dinner at Buca di Beppo and had ordered Buca's cake for us (it was probably enough cake for 20!) to celebrate.

When we went to Jersey last month to visit FI's family, his mom and brother surprised us with a very nice lunch and got a cake from the bakery that FI loves to celebrate both our engagement and his sister's (she got engaged the week before we got to town).

I imagine that if we all did not live so far apart, we would have had one big dinner with both of our immediate families there together.

I had my engagement party the same day I got engaged lol. After my FI proposed and we walked around the beach for a while ( He proposed at the place where we first met), we went back to the car. I thought we were going back to my house, however he blind folded me and said he had another surprise.  When the car stopped I was super nervous and had no idea were we where. When the blind fold came off I was at my house filled with my friends and family, a DJ, and a caterer. My house had transformed into a total engagement party, theme and all. I truly can not ask for better family,friends, and FI who planned everything

We aren't having one. I guess we aren't the typical couple.... We aren't doing the whole, huge rehearsal dinner either. We will have food at the venue for people to eat after the rehearsal, but only for people who are partcipating. I guess we are cheap like that!

My FMIL is throwing us an engagement party in the spring, since the weather in the northeast is pretty nasty until then. She's in nyc and my family is in Massachusetts my parents have already met his parents sooo She wanted an opportunity for me to meet all the people in nyc that i haven't met yet. she doesn't me (or FI) to say who the heck is that at the wedding. I think it's just going to be a cocktail party at her apartment. from what i understand it's not going to be huge, but she's fancy, so we shall see.
