vinegar hair rinse - any experience?

so I read about the good qualities of vinegar and how it can boost the shine of hair and make it slightly lighter. Has anyone tried this? did it work?
I would post this on the Hair 411 board, but it is so dead there...

  • I've heard of people doing that and it's supposed to work.

I've also heard of people washing their hair with beer, so who knows....
  • that sounds like a waste of beer to me :D

  • I wouldn't do this only because the smell. Just the thought of vinegar makes me gag a little. I've done a mayo hair-mask (yes, mayonnaise, ick) and it made my hair look AMAZING, but it also smelled terrible for a week. To me, that wasn't worth it.

You can do an egg mix to make your hair shinier, and it has no smell. I've done that and it works pretty well, too. My friend/hair guru says the John Freida stuff works really well for shine.. I can't think of what it's called, though.

I'm not sure about vinegar and like brittneyh4 said, the smell miht be a bit overwhelming. I use extra virgin coconut oil and it makes my hair smell yummy and it turns out silky smooth.

  • I've done it before and it does make my hair shiny and soft. The smell is gone once you dry your hair though!

Mix it with a bit of water...don't dump straigt vinegar on your hair!

  • well, I am more curious about the lightening effect. My hair is in a preety nice state right now, but I love that sun-bleached effect. so I'm being impatient instead of waiting for the sun to do it.
Here's the funny thing, I'm a vinegar addict. I seriously love vinegar and everything pickled! I will sometimes stop in the aisle at the store because I can smell it through the plastic bottles... and take a good, deep breath haha.
I tried it today and I'm not sure if it lightened the hair, but it definitely gave it a nice sheen. I should do this more often!

  • I love using vinegar to make my hair really soft- I've been doing it since I was really little.  The smell goes away quickly, but I've always diluted it.  I've heard lemon is good for lightening, but I've never tried it (I love my darker hair!)

  • I know I suggested the beer, but every single thing in this thread makes me want to throw up. Beer included...but none more than mayonnaise. Bleck.
