Ring Appraisal Question

So I'm getting my ring appraised to get it insured. I know I'm behind on this but we have a really good warranty from Zales. This is just in case. Anyways, up to $1,000 of it is covered now by our renter's insurance but he said since it's worth more get an appraisal with a picture, description, etc. I'm gettign it soldered and rhodium plated soon. That won't change the value right? FI asked and now I'm curious. TIA!

Re: Ring Appraisal Question

  • It can change the value, but not but much. Mostly a ring is appraised by the weight of the gold, and the 4 c's of the diamonds.

  • I'm pretty sure the rhodium won't since I had that done to mine too, but I don't know about the soldering.  This is one thing that we really need to do - we've had it appraised but we need to get renter's insurance & get a rider for it ASAPPPP, I get so nervous when I remember we need to do this!

  • Sodering will, because it'll change the weight and the carats since your wedding band has diamonds. Plus that makes it more like 1 ring instead of 2. Rhodium plating will not.

  • The insurance will cover the current value of the ring.  If you get it soldered, the value will probably change and the insurance might not be valid anymore because the ring/ring value has changed.  I would check with your insurance company just to be sure....

<div>Ditto all this. I would get one appraisal now, just to be safe and then another one after.</div>
  • Thanks everyone! We're gonna get it appraised by the end of the week and I'm getting it soldered early April (bridal portraits in early May and it takes 2 weeks)

Get an appraisal now and insure for that value. Once the rings are soldered together get another appraisal and adjust the value. You will the have two rings that have become one, so it will impact your value.
