Ladies, I need your help!

So, I am DIYing my flowers (just bouquets and bouts) but I've been being indecisive and not committing to any type of flower. I have been toying with the idea of using carnations for the bouquets because I found some pretty cool pictures that changed my mind about them. Well, I have decided that's what I am going to do for sure because it's about the only thing that will make me happy and still be in our budget. My question, though, is what to do for bouts? I just feel a single carnation will look SO weird and not at all what I want them to look like. The reason I am ok with the carnations is because they look good in numbers.

So, what should I do for bouts? Pick another type of flower? If so, what do you think I should pick? I appreciate any help you are willing to give me.

Also, if anyone is curious about what I'm going for with the bouquets, here is an inspiration pic (except mine will be all one color and they will most likely be purple):

Can you bunch three carnations together? I think it would be fine if you go with a different flower, but the same color if you want to. I am not usually a fan of carnations, but love your pic.

Here is one I found that is kind of what I had in mind. It may only be one, but it looks like it could be a few bunched together?

  • What about spray roses? You can get them in thoses colors and they're smaller so they won't look so weird. You can have mabye 2 or 3 with some greenery behind them.

  • I could, but do you think that would look ok? I guess I should probably just go to the grocery store and buy carnations and play around. I just have this feeling that a small amount of carnations would look weird.

As for using another flower in the same color, that's is where I will run into a problem. The carnations I will most likely be using are a very deep purple and there really isn't any flowers that are the same color. Which is also why I had such a hard time deciding on flowers to begin with.
  • I don't think a single carnation would look that weird. I just googled "carnation boutonniere" and it looks good to me. Add a couple leaves to the flower and it should be fine.

Could your bouts be a different color? For example, my girls will have mostly orange flowers since they are wearing pink dresses and the boys will be wearing orange ties and vests (with black tuxes and white shirts) and will have fuchsia bouts. Can you do something like that?

Dutch irises have a deep purple, not sure if that would work for your colors, but if you only need a few for bouts, it may not be too pricey.

  • Aha, I missed the part about them being purple. Something like this would look nice:

I think they're using mini carnations, which would look much better than full-sized carnations.

  • Or could you use dark purple ribbon on a different colored flower or greenery? What about using fake flowers for the bouts? No one will notice. That may give you more options for flower types.

  • They have those deep purple calla lillies. Those would be pretty. Or you could go a totally different route. I think anemones would look really neat.
  • What about a cluster of 3 mini carnations, especially if you can get the two-toned ones that are tinged in that dark purple color.

FWIW, I used to grow mini carnations and they were really simple (they are just tiny, tiny bushes) you could try growing them yourself!.

From what I have been told and also seen online on websites, anemones are really hard to get in June. I REALLY wanted to have an all anemone bouquet but I just couldn't find an online wholesaler that could even get them in June. Am I wrong? Can I get them in June. Because if so, my decision may just be undone. Haha!
  • Now that I see all the pictures you post of the carnation bouts, I don't think they look too bad either. I guess I hadn't bothered to google pictures because I just had it in my head that they wouldn't look good.

Also, now that we've brought up the color issue, is everyone else not matching the colors to the BM dresses? My colors are purple and gray. The BM dresses are purple and since there are no gray flowers to my knowledge (and if there are, they probably aren't cheap), I am going with purple flowers. Do you ladies think this will look weird?
