Gahhhh...Etsy advice...

So, I messaged a seller on Etsy about making me a pair of earrings. I sent her a pic of ones that I tried on at the store where I got my dress that I loved but were kind of pricey. She said she could make something very similar and sent me a pic today...I really don't like them very much. She just did a mock up and I haven't paid a deposit so I don't think I'm on the hook, but I feel bad and don't know what to say.She has also not been very good at communication. I just really don't think they look anything like the pic I sent, and she is charging $60 and I think that's a bit expensive for what they look like.Am I a jerk? Any ideas on what to tell her...I really don't want to buy them...

To piggy back in an only tangentially related way... I have come a bit down on etsy, particularly for custom made things. I've had a 50/50 success vs. failure rate, and the successes are always the stuff they premake. I guess it really depends on the vendor, but it's hit-or-miss.

I don't think you have any sort of commitment here. She's just showing you what she can do, and if you're not happy with what she showed you, say so. Maybe tell her that it's not quite what you had in mind, and ask if she thinks she could play with it a little to make it look more like the picture of the ones you sent. And FYI, handmade jewelry is most of the time more expensive than something you can pick up at Claires. :) It takes labor and finding the right beads and stuff to get it right. And frankly, if she wants your business, she won't mind a little honesty and critique to make you happy. You are paying her after all. She shouldn't take it personally. If she does, move on.

I think you can just kindly tell her that it wasn't quite what you were looking for, you appreciate her time and effort, and wish her the best.

I feel like I've gotten good at saying this to vendors finally.  :)
