Wedding Dresses

Hello Everyone!

I was wondering when you were all planning on buying your wedding dresses?  Or if you have already please share how the dress shopping went.

This is the one area of planning that I am really not looking forward to for some reason.  I feel like I will never find a dress I like.  I don't want to be one of the brides that tries on 200 dresses.

I have booked my venue, photographer, DJ and started buying materials for my centerpieces.  How long can I go before trying on dresses?

Re: Wedding Dresses

  • But you're in Boston!  There are so many fun places to go!

Many of the ladies here have already bought their dresses, but you have months to go before you really need to make a decision.  Take your time!

I went to four different salons and found 2 dresses at each that I liked.  There were a couple front runners. Oddly, a whole other option came to me and I think that's the one I'm going with.  I'll know this weekend.  :)

Where in Boston are you?  I'm headed up there in two weeks to see my family (in Needham) and I'm going to hit a couple shops with my mother and sister-in-law, just for fun.

A lot of girls put their wedding dresses in this thread, you may find some inspiration there. (So it is not too early for you to be going as a lot of us already have ours!)

Trying on dresses is fun! The easiest way to make sure you find something you'll fall in love with is to try on all kinds of dresses. I, like other brides, wound up buying a dress that we never thought we would wind up with, but it was THE dress.

Edit: I found mine on the first day out, third shop.
The first shop was wonderful and the lady had me try on all different kinds of dresses so we knew which type looked good and which looked not so great.
The second place was terrible. She kept putting me into dresses that swalllowed me whole and refused to bring out dresses in with the waist we already knew looked good on me from the first shop. We still had fun because we were laid back for the whole experience and just made fun of how I looked in the crazy dresses she brought out before we finally had enough of that and left.
The third shop was even better than the first (obviously since that's where I found my dress). The lady there just knew what kind of dress would look good on me because everything she brought out looked amazing on me. She loved how laid back I was and said I was very easy to deal with.

Just go out there with a wonderful attitude and you will be fine!
  • i am planning to wear the dress that my mom wore in her wedding to my dad. the dress has been in my family since the 1930s and many women have worn it, beginning with my grandfather's sister. that said, the dress is currently across the country in california, as one of my mom's cousins was the last to wear it. we have no idea what condition its in, and i dont know how it will look on me. my mommy is currently working on getting it shipped to us. if this all doesnt work out, i will start shopping for a dress probably soon.... but right now its really nerve wracking not knowing if i need to find my own dress or not!  me being so anxious.... i'd start looking now!

Pretty much this.  I was dead set on a lace, fitted dress with a bit of a train and NOT strapless.  What did I get?  An A-line, strapless dress, no train and no lace.  HAHAHA.  Oh well.  I knew it was THE dress when I tried it on.  It just made my face light up and I couldn't stop smiling.

I went to four different places and tried on about 20 dresses.  Each experience was completely different.  I tried on dresses at a department store wedding boutique, two very different bridal boutiques and at David's Bridal.

Maybe since you don't really know what you're looking for, I would go with an idea of how you want to feel and what you want your look to portray.  After explaining this to a consultant, they should be able to pull some different styles for you to try on and then they will work off of your reactions.  A good consultant will be able to go in the right direction from the vibes you give off.  Trust them.
  • I haven't gone dress shopping at all yet. I've looked at a ton of dresses in magazines and on-line to see what I like or what I don't like. I'm planning on going in July or so.

  • I got my dress in March. My grandmothers bought it. You just need to find something you fall in love with in your price range. It will happen, just have patience
  • Since you have the big things like your venue out of the way and know what style of wedding you are having, you can really go shopping whenever you like.  I do recommend buying it by at least 7-8 months out though to allow for the dress to be made and all your fittings.

    I bought mine last weekend.

  • I'm actually going this weekend! I'm going to 2 different stores and 2 of my bridesmaids are going with me so we are going to look at dresses for them while we are out
  • i'm giving myself a deadline of september to have my dress picked out and ordered so there will be lots of time for alterations and whatnot.
