Hello ladies (& chrmun, if you're lurking around)!
So FI and I just got back from our lovely weekend away (so much fun!) and I was catching up on my usual sites when I came across today's Dear Abby column. And, well... Here it is:
DEAR ABBY: I'm writing you about a disgusting, rude and, in my opinion, obscene habit -- the bride and groom shoving wedding cake in each other's faces. The couple are all dressed up in their beautiful finery. They have a wonderful ceremony and a perfect reception table. How rude and insensitive to the person he or she has just promised before God to love, honor and cherish -- not to mention disrespectful.
What do you think of this "custom," and do you agree with me? -- FAITHFUL LITTLE ROCK READER
I've heard cake smashing called gross, and annoying, but disgusting and obscene? Not to mention - rude and insensitive?!
FI and I have fully discussed whether we wanted to do this, and we both decided that smashing the cake in each others' faces just wasn't for us. But I wouldn't go so far as to call it obscene or insensitive. After all - what marriage is going to last without a sense of humor? I suppose, though, that I've also assumed that other couples actually discuss this aspect as well.
Interestingly enough, Dear Abby agreed with the writer that this is a custom that should have been "retired" a long time ago. Apparently it's actually something that's rather demeaning to women, as the overall act was supposed to symbolize the bride's submissiveness to her groom - one last act of childish rebellion, in which the new husband showed his maturity and superiority, while the young and immature new wife apologizes and cleans him off.
So now I'm dying to know-
1. Have you and your FI discussed whether you plan to smush cake in each others' faces?
2. Were you aware of the fact that it's an old and apparently demeaning custom?
3. Do you agree that it's "obscene and insensitive" or do you feel that it just depends on every couple's style?
