DJ Meeting

I have a phone call with a DJ today and I have no idea what to ask (other than pricing). Any tips?

Re: DJ Meeting

  • You might want to ask how he (or she) deals with song requests, if he honors a "do not play" list, can they guarantee that they will play your "must play" songs? Also how do they dress, do they provide any MCing (will they announce things like bouquet toss, cake cutting, etc?). Will you need custom made entrance music for when you enter the reception? And if so, can the DJ provide that? Are thre any special requirements the DJ needs to set up, such as extension cords, being within a certain distance of outlets, a table, etc?

I also ask all my vendors what plan they have in place if there is an illness or another reason that particular vendor cannot make it to the wedding.
  • Ask about his song list. Does he have a set-list that he always plays? Can you submit a DO NOT playlist for him? Does he take request from guests? Does he "run the show" AKA act as an MC? What kind of equipment does he bring, and does he need anything from you (outlets, extension cords)??

  • I would also ask how many people he uses per wedding, will there always be someone there manning the music meaning when they take breaks to eat or whatever that there is someone at the dj stand. What equipment he uses, how many lights, if you plan to have a gobo what size you need so you can purchase it yourself (the djs try to claim that they are expensive but they are really cheap). How many hours are in their packages, do/how much they charge for overtime if needed.

  • I would also ask about what happens last minute if they cannot be their due to illness, a death, etc.

  • Thanks ladies!

I pulled these right off of my DJ contract, we get to choose how we prefer he act, ie how involed he is etc, I appreciate how flexible he is more than anything, so asking how he handles these typed of things may help:

    1. a Disc Jockey has complete control of music. DJ should read the crowd, take requests and play what everyone seems to enjoy.

b Mostly play the music selected from the list, take requests and read the crowd.

c Only play the music selected along with minimal requests.

d Only play the music selected, NO Requests.

    2 On the Microphone-

    a No Announcements needed.

b Conservative. Just make the announcements when necessary.

c Adapt to crowd. DJ should moderately interact with guests.

d Encourage. DJ should interact with guests and encourage participation.

e Perform. DJ should be active and vocal, encourage guest participation and utilize special events
    or dances, if appropriate.

    3 Coordinating Reception Events-
a DJ has control of schedule. DJ should determine best schedule of events according to event
b information and entire schedule, given during consultation.(We will inform other vendors)

c DJ has control of events. DJ should work with the schedule given and make announcements at
appropriate times. (We will inform other vendors)

d Other people will be coordinating. DJ should make announcements and help when needed.

e We have a coordinator. DJ should make announcements when told to do so.
