Dollar Dance?

Who is doing one?  It is pretty traditional to have one in my family so I know we want to have one, but I dont know how much time to set aside for it.  We will have about 150 guests.  Am I crazy to think that we shouldn't need more than 10 - 15 minutes? the DJ suggested 40 and that just seems insane to me!

Re: Dollar Dance?

  • Ew. If you must do one, keep the time down.
  • 40 mins seems really long. I think if you let you DJ know that you only want it to be 15 minutes that he can announce it when there is like 5 mins left.... and you can have your BM and MOH move people faster toward the end to get through everyone. I think 40 mins of dance floor "hogging" is too much and I think its rude to your guests.... but I think having it shorter would be fine.

It is expected in my area as well that you have a dollar dance. I know its looked down upon on TK, but this is one of those regional things that I think is fine. I dont think we are going to do one.... but we havent decided for sure yet.

  • We are not having one. Our DJ asked if we wanted one and we said no. It's just not for us.

Same here and while they're accepted it's just not something we want to have incorporated at our wedding.

But really, I've never seen one go more than 20 minutes.

  • It's not normal in our social scene to do one. As a guest, I would get bored after watching a dollar dance for 40 mins. If people want to give you $$, they can always find you after the dance and give it to you

Ash- I agree on teh 40 mins being WAY too long..... but the point of the dance isnt to "make money" ... its a fun way to interact and give some of your guests some one on one time. There is no expectation for anyone to give more than a dollar.... its fun.... its not for some people (like me and FI).... but it can be fun with the right couple. No one is going to find you after the dance to give you a dollar.... ya know what I mean?

Its a St. Louis thing too but FI and I won't be doing one. I agree with pp's that 40 min is way to long. From a guest and WP perspective anytime I've been at a wedding where they have this go longer then one song I lose interest and am ready for the real dancing to begin lol I say 5-10min (1 or 2 songs) or if you can have the DJ play a mix or medley of songs during this so it doesn't seem to take so long.

** I was in a wedding 3 years ago where I was the "collector" for the dancing couple. They also had me tap the guests to let them know when their 'turn' was up. Super awkward but I guess they had me do it so the line would move faster or we would have been there all night.

  • About half the weddings I've been to have had the dollar dance, so they are considered fine by my family. But we aren't doing one. I think you should do about 3 songs MAX. 40 minutes would be obscene.

  • I think 15 min is fine. I like dollar dances. I think they're fun. FI didn't wanna do one so were not

  • I think 15 mins sounds just about right; I'm not doing one but even to me, 40 minutes sounds pretty excessive.

  • FI and I aren't doing one, but they're done quite a bit around where I live.  I've never, ever seen them go longer than about 10 or 15 minutes.  One of my best friends had 300+ people at her wedding and theirs lasted maybe 15 minutes.  If your BM and MOH (or whoever is collecting money and saying "next!") is really good about having a quick turnover it doesn't need to take long at all and it's still fun for everyone involved.
  • i have never seen one done either. not even sure what that is, to be honest. But I'd like to experience it as a guest sometime. I think the traditions from different regions are quite fascinating.

  • I agree with the majority and say 15 mins.  We are doing one because FI family is really into it, so I hope it's not bad!

I love that you posted this because I think you are spot on. It is accepted and expected in our circle and I love the idea of it. Again, not 40 minutes but 15 is probably max we will go. I remember being a little girl and loving the idea that I am important enough to get to dance with the groom :)

    That's how I roll!
  • It's just something we do in our families. I think it is fun. People that don't want to "pay" to do it will ask me to dance later but as a guest I never really feel comfortable asking the groom to dance because I feel that they have other things to do, KWIM?
    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • We're doing one. But it will be one song, two tops.
  • We're definitely not doing one, but I have been to several wedding before where it was really fun (especially large weddings).  Guests laughed - guys will pay a dollar to dance with the groom instead of the bride, a group of girls will surround the bride and such.  It depends on the crowd you have at the wedding as well as whether they are accustomed to having one.

It's not for me, but don't knock it if you've never even seen one done.
  • Michelle, I have seen them done and I still don't get them. Are they the most horrible thing ever on this planet? No. I still don't get it and would never subject my guests to it because I feel it's tacky. If someone really wants to dance with FI or I, all they have to do is ask and we'll be more than happy to oblige. Y'know, as long as they don't interrupt our special dances.

Really, everyone else can do whatever they want. I'll still never understand them and I don't have to.

One wedding reception I was at had a special one just for the groom where guests paid to give him lap dances. His MIL even participated. Gross. To be clear, I have seen the normal slow dance ones as well.

Travis, just like you and others feel that dollar dances are "just something my family does", it's "just something my family doesn't do". Well a few have, but it's not the norm and everyone was taken aback.
  • I agree with Jess- its def. a regional thing and in some circles it would be looked at as tacky and selfish. You have to know you crowd and proceed in that fashion :)

I agree with this post. It is def. a regional thing. I know my family out east has never heard of the dollar dance, but Fi's family has and loves it.

Also, I agree with everything you've said, I've never seen them done and also don't understand the draw to them in the slightest bit.
