Pre-natal vitamins?

Hi ladies,
Does anyone know anything about pre-natal vitamins? Are you taking them before your wedding? I've heard they strengthen and help your hair grow and it's common for brides to take them before the wedding. I was thinking about taking them but I'm concerned since I don't know much about them.  How long can I be on them for? (I know you're supposed to start using them before you get pregnant- and I want to be pregnant by Thanksgiving).  Do I continue my regular vitamins as well?  Any other suggestions?
THANKS!

Re: Pre-natal vitamins?

  • Do not continue with regular vitams as a vitamin overdose can be very hazardous to your health!! You can be on prenatals as you need. Good luck!
  • Prenatal Vitamins are safe to my knowledge and I took them years ago before becoming preggers with my now 7 year old daughter ! I'm now on them again for my hair & nails. I can't wait to get preggers again and hopefully by august or sept we'll have some news to share by Christmas!

I started taking them about 6 months ago. I am not very good at remembering (good thing we don't use BC pills! haha) but it hasn't done much for my hair and nails. Maybe I am not noticing. I actually started taking them because I needed new vitamins but I wouldn't have finished the new bottle before I needed to take prenatals, so I just got them early. I warned FI first so he didn't freak. haha

Don't take two vitamins. My doctor said that anyone of childbearing age should be taking them, just in case they get pregnant. So you can take them for many years.

  • If you're interested in just hair and skin results for now -- just take hair skin and nails it's a vitamin OTC. And very effective but yes vitamins can be harmful if you take too much so be careful :)
  • Thanks ladies!!

  • Honestly pre-natal vitamins are a waste of money. You're going to get rid of a lot it that you don't need. I would do biotin. It helped me
  • Thanks Zims! I think I might go with the hair, skin and nails thing. I'll have to check into it a little more.  Thanks!

  • I also take biotin, and folic acid. My mother is a nurse practitioner in high-risk obgyn and reccommended to me and my female friends that we start taking folic acid because it decreases the chance of spina bifida (and many other diseases) in babies. It's never too early!

  • Aren't prenatal vitamins just a "special" formulation of regular vitamins?

I take regular gummy vitamins with extra vitamin E, iron, and calcium/magnesium/zinc supplements.  Admittedly, my hair has been really healthy for years regardless, but my nails do seem to be getting stronger.

  • You can start taking them anytime. The only difference in them and regular vitamins is there are "extras" in it to help prevent birth defects when you become pregnant. Get the OTC kind.... they are cheaper and just as effective. If you want them for hair and nail growth/strength start taking them now, if you want them for when you want to get pregnant, start them about a month before TTC. I will be starting mine in May. :)

  • If you just want to take them to help your hair and nails grow, I wouldn't bother.  I would recommend just taking Biotin for that since that's what it does.

You really only need to take prenatal vitamin before you start TTC.  They are like regular vitamins you'd take daily but also have extra folic acid and a few others to help the baby develop properly.  Yes, your hair and nails will grow too but anything your body doesn't need it will either be eliminated or stored (pending on the component) so IMO, why pay for stuff you don't need?
